child labor laws, how illigal is this

well guys i work at a reception hall, and some things do not seem right, i was just woundreing about some child labor laws here, casue i work at a place and im a minor im 17,(along with 70 percent of the staff), and i was woundering how much i could dick over my boss if he ever decided to fire me hahah im evil

 

well let me start by saying i work 10 hr days, usually from 4-12, but sometimes i will work till 1 or 2 in the morning and i have worked 13 hr days with no breaks at all, also i have worked a 52 hr week before, they also dont give us food or breaks

 

also during the week when then do food prepping they have a dog in the kitchen

 

there are a handful of kids there that are paid under the table

 

i have served liquor before liek wine and hard liquor for peoples coffe, and my freinds who are minor have passed out mini wine bottles as wedding favors

 

during the week and on party nights the cooks dont use hair nets or rubber cloves or anything

 

these are just some of the things that is going on there, and im woundering just how illigal it is and how much trouble i can get the owner in if i deciede to make a few phone calls, i really dont mind i am getting paid 8 dollers an hr so im not complaining i was just woundering thanks guys

13 hours aint shit. ive worked 15 before at a restaurant and more at the dealership I worked for. BTW i made less than 8/ hr in both instances. if you are just looking to see how much trouble you could get your boss in id say, check out some child labor law websites. i mean we like some variety in our general discussion forum, but shit. besides, what if they correct person see this and ratws him out. i know its happened before on other borads ive been to, so why not now. its best not to bring up illegal subjects like this.

So you have no opportunity, if you wanted, to take a break or have lunch/drink/bathroom etc.? I think most labor laws (field dependant) require two 15minutes breaks and a 30minute lunch in a typical 8 hour work day. I can understand undue circumstance but day in and day out, they need to be investigated. You would call your state's health and labor commision.

well i do like my job, i dont wanna get the owner introuble, its jus hes an asshole and a stuck up bitch, supposidly he already went to jail for tax invasion or something, it is jsut i was talkin with some freinds who work their, and they were jsut saying o i wounder how much trouble we could get him in if we did report him....so guys dont think im complaining about working, its a job im 17 i cant ask for anything more

 

but no they dont let you have breaks, and if you asked for breaks they would probably fire you or just would take you off the scedual(sp), i mean yes you can stop and go to the bathroom, or get a drink, but as far as eating or 30 min breaks no way, actually they throw alot of food away instead of giving it to the staff because he doesnt want us standing around eating it.....

 

just a joke but i was thinking i could start asking for breaks and if they fire me i can sue them for dipression or mental instability because now i dont think i am worth anything because i couldnt hold a job...haha i bet id win casue our country is f-ed up about that shit....

Well I think its rediculous that the kid cant even take a lunch break after working long hours. It does sound like some shady shit and the dude is taking advantage of the younger help in that respect. I think you should ask for a lunch break and if he fires you then report his ass and collect unemoployment if you are eligible. Fuck that dude, people taking advantage of minors like that need to be shot.

 

If anything, you are learning what it is like to really work for a living, but no breaks and shit is dumb. I dont put up with crap like that and wouldnt. In fact you could just not say anything, and make up for it in other ways, be creative.

I am fortunate enough to have a great job, I dont have to worry about that crap, I work 12-16 hours a day 7 days a week in the fall and spring, but I get paid well for that work. I get all the breaks i need, 1 hour paid lunch, the company usually pays for lunch and drinks and shit. I get to travel all over the world (mostly in the US).What does this mean for you?? Get a college education, and get yourself into a carreer that will take you places. (dont go work for mcdonalds right out of college, wait and find a good job).

The last 2-3 months when I'm at work and I'm sweating, havin a tough day and thinking "man...this sucks and I want to go home early, or just go work on my bike," I think of the guy that comes into my shop a few times per month that is happy (HAPPY!!!) this is his first summer and hopefully christmas at home with his family in 4 years. He's been to Iraq ALOT, and he told me when he's given a job he does it. He's got 15 years in, he plans on retiring at 20, and even runs a concrete finishing business on the side.

 

I keep that in my head when I think its less than perfect conditions at the shop, or the gym when I'm (and 40 other people) doing my 60 minutes of cardio and the cheap bastards won't turn on the AC even though they own 10 Golds Gyms in this area....those soldiers out there putting everything they have on the line and can't just say "man its hot in here." and go home like I can. Hell I have the luxury of a 20 minute shit break at work when it comes up, and I don't have people shooting at me while I'm doin it.
