STLBILL Posted June 22, 2005 Report Posted June 22, 2005 (edited) Hi all: Just learned if you slide or spin an aluminum wheel and rubber tire fast enough the debris shower can explode as it basically makes "rocket fuel". You pretty much need to keep going on a flat tire to produce this effect. (source: History channel Modern Marvels). Interesting... sounds like a damn good reason to buy bead locks to me! Sounds like something someone on here should have experienced by now? -Bill Edited June 22, 2005 by STLBILL Quote

My uncle works at Thiokol (the people that make the rocket boosters for the Space Shuttle) and its a little more complicated but basically aluminum oxide and ground up rubber can make a great rocket. Dark Ranger Posted June 22, 2005 Report Posted June 22, 2005 I'm guessing that at the low amount we could produce it wouldn't be much of a problem. Not to mention you would need an ignition source. Also, how often do your wheel slip on the rim? I've only had that happen with under inflated tires when they were wet from water or snow (an ignition hinderance). Quote
dogboystoy Posted June 22, 2005 Report Posted June 22, 2005 Your ignition source could be from the heat generated from the friction of the tire slipping on the rim... Quote

Why ain't I moving!' Quote
SANDSTAR Posted June 22, 2005 Report Posted June 22, 2005 I think I read somewhere that rubber and aluminum was the fuel used in that virgin atlantic space ship one. I think you would also need some compressed oxygen to get it to burn once it caught fire. Quote
