dirt-riceburner Posted June 17, 2005 Report Posted June 17, 2005 Why not just put in a 13 tooth up front? It's cheap, easy and makes a helleva difference in the trails. Quote
rebelbanshee2 Posted June 17, 2005 Report Posted June 17, 2005 Id say gearing down is one of the worse things you can do for trails. All you do is spin and rev out and you will be shifting like a madman. put a 15t on there. It smooths the power hit out and lets the engine pull longer. you will have the slip the clutch more but it will be much more rideable and faster. Quote

I'm not trying to be a dick. Gearing down is one of the best things you can do to make it more trail worthy IMO. It does depend on your definition of trails though I guess. Some of the trails I ride on require low rpm's in 1st gear to navigate around the obstacles. I guess without seeing the riding area it would be hard to say. I've never regretted gearing mine down and I've never had trouble in tight trails with an extended swingarm. Quote
rocketboy Posted June 18, 2005 Report Posted June 18, 2005 some will say gear up ,some say gear down. some say minus on the swinger ,others plus. ill give you some good advise . your dad needs several things to really be trail freindly ,first id get higher compression like 180 psi this adds drastic amounts of bottom end torque, also if its dune ported itll suck bad on trails ,he really needs an mx style port job to have response and not have to be always "on the pipe" all the time too ,also get platinum plugs so the y dont always "load up" or foul in the tight stuff, then id look into 22" maxxis all-trac tires, these really bite for trails IMO. id keep the swinger stock and width and gearing stock and run a newer used set of yfz450 front shocks off ebay(like185$) to soak up drops ,ruts, also pipe selection is critical.fmf knarly's , pt mids or dynoport 2-1 are really good choices for lowend rpm and response. do all this and itll chug and pull through the trails very well and rip in the open sections too Quote
Banshee~ Posted June 18, 2005 Report Posted June 18, 2005 some people climb hills with shortened swingarms, i dont think it would be a problem. what kind of porting and pipes does your dad have now? for the trails u would want a mild port that produces a smooth powerband. 382570[/snapback] Have you ever climbed a decent hill on even a stock shee? Your ass puckers up pretty tight when your flying a steep hill with your front tires floating half way up it Quote

I lean forward like hell all the way up. Quote

With a 13 tooth it makes 1st gear useless and 2nd gear reely short! Quote
Fireman-hott Posted June 19, 2005 Report Posted June 19, 2005 (edited) My opinion take it for what its worth. Keep the gearing stock. If you go up to a 15t front drop the rear tires to 18" tires. If you drop to a 13t front up the tires to 22" tires. Shorten the swinger two inches. widen the shee +1+1 or +2+1 depending on the tightness of the trails width wise. I extended my axle +2 also, but thats going to depend on the width of the trails again. I ride some tight ass trails but have enough room width wise to squeeze through. Get new shocks, I recommend Elka only because thats all i have ridden. Find a package deal on the arms+shocks and get the shocks made for trail riding and his weight. Up the compression in the cylinders to at least 150. preferrably 180ish if he can afford to run race fuel. The added bottom end at 180-190 is immensly noticable. Porrting you want something like a Gorr port or a trinity MX port or whatever the Passion equiv. is. Something for the lower powerband. I recommend a 2 into 1 pipe and 2 into 1 carb if he is only going to trail ride it. Tell the porting person that you are going to b e running a 2 into 1 or whatever pipe you choose so the port specs can be matched. But all this advise comes from a guy that runs a 68mm bore cheetah cub running rocket pipes and a 2 into 1 35mm carb in tight trails hanging with the lovely 700vforces and 450s. But what do I know about trail riding. *Edit* Oh and if any of you are in NW Indiana on a Sunday hit me up we'll go bust out some trails if I"m not doing some family event or building pipes.
