Ok, since my rebuild (Noss Head, Carbs bored...) my banshee wont start cold. Even with full choke she doesnt want to start. Never had the problem before the noss head and carb boring. Anyway, does this sound like lean pilots? I have adjusted the Air Screw and the banshee has pretty crisp response off idle at about 3 turns out. I read somewhere that if you go past 2 that you need a bigger pilot. Anyway, just looking for some ideas. Banshee runs great, needle and main jetting are right on for glamis. Im running 91oct. pump gas with Klotz at 32:1. Uni pod filters. Im also running the Dyna Ignition and have it in the Curve that advances timing through the entire RPM range. Stator is at 0 degrees. Carbs are Clean and floats are within the tollerance.

also after the shee is warm and then sits for 30 minutes or so i need to choke it to get her back to life.

thanks guys!

I think I remember sredish saying something about the more you advance your timing along with high compression the harder it is to get started when cold. :shrugani: (dyna ignition) I guess you could always try and go up a size on the pilot, but I had a VERY similar problem and mine was compression. I installed a noss head and checked my compression immediately after and had 150 in both cylinders...I ended up riding about 10 hours or so and checked my compression again. 100 in one and 80 in the other. I think what happened was the rings were already nearing replacing, and after adding more compression to the mix it went ahead and did them in...If you haven't checked the compression after you noticed the problem, I would definitely do so to rule that out.

Sounds backwards. 3 turns out makes it leaner on the pilot....Try turning it in to a .5 turn out and see if it starts better...needing the choke after 30 minutes sounds like a lean pilot. Try a 27.5 pilot and go from there. Trial and error, make sure you readjust the air screws.

thanks, im gonna pull the carbs tomorrow and see what pilot jet is in there. it started fine before the mods. ill start messing and see where i get. i can always set the dyna back to stock for troubleshooting. thanks for the inputs!

re: seems backwards.

Yep. If you're out 'too far' on the air screw (more air), that is an indication that you need a smaller pilot jet. Likewise, if you're in 'too far' (less air), that is an indication that you need a larger pilot jet.

That's a generalization. If you're running a modified carburetor (RB-Designs for example), you will find that the air screw has a completely different effect on tuning than on an oem carb. For example, the 'too far' out idea doesn't really apply.

Anyway...a turn in on the airscrew for a choke cold start, then re-adjust for normal temp running may help. Kind of a pain.

How about your choke/cold start procedure? If you don't do this already, choke it, kick it a few times with the ignition off, then try to light it up. You might try varying the 'few times' idea.

All things considered...how it runs when it's warmed up is much more important than what it takes to get it started. If you have to fuss with it some to get it choke/cold started and it runs perfect when hot...that's not too much to deal with, is it.

A general btw...the higher the tuned state of 'things' the more likely there is to be choke/cold start problems.

pulled my carbs today and cleaned them. I do have the stock 25s in for my pilots. i think they were gummed up a bit. anyway, cleaned the carbs, checked the floats, and put her all back together. She started on the 3rd kick here in tucson. Air screws are out about 1-1.5 turns, so i guess for 2,500 feet im good for the pilot circuit. But my problem is down in Glamis. Goin for pres day, so i guess i will see what happens then.

Wouldnt a modifed banshe ie. pipes, head (higher compression), timing advance, normally run a larger pilot? or is that one of the jets that isnt affected by mods?? One banshee jetting website said i should be running a 30 with my mods at sea level?

I was told by Mike at Cascade Innovations that the larger pilot for the dunes is for when you are hard on the throttle and crest the dune and immediately back off the throttle that the larger pilot is for keeping fuel in the cylinder to keep the temps down. I consider Mike a banshee expert as Cascade is known for their banshees and he is the main mechanic that has been there from the beginning.

I'll be next door to him too!!!!!!!!!

Well give me your GPS coordinates, and i will look you guys up! I can give you the coords to our camp ground in wash one as well. Would be nice to hook up with a few HQer and go ride with some real banshee riders...not the normal DS650s and shit i have been riding with latley.
