Hey I got a banshee few weeks ago, its jetted for summer, runs great in anything above 40 but its been 0- 30 lately so i took out the 260 main that was in it and put in a 290 started it up, started right up first second kick, idled fine by it self, then it just died. started it up drove it slowly around and it kept bogging out and stalling then finaly it just died and I havent been able to start it sence....I also go a 280 main do u guys think I should put in the 280 mains and move the clip up one and that might clear it up? when it was running i only rode for 1-3 min. and it was ok once u got going just keptbogging out. Also when I was taking off the carbs Hit the floats a few times with my hands but not to hard i dont think i messed it up. and Im getting spark and fuel on the plugs. How big of a dif. will going from 290's to 280's make if it wont start and is getting flooded? I dont wanna try a 270 cause it had a 260 in it..... and it ran like a beats in 40- 50 like i said with the 260's but i never rode it in the summer. - Bob

I think going from 260 to 290 is a pretty big jump on the mains....I would try the 280 out, maybe even the 270 if it's still too rich. Remember that your pilot jet is what controls idling, so technically if it dies while it's idling your main jet is not going to be the culprit. The bog you're feeling is probably from your main jet being too rich. What do your plugs look like? It may be dying on you because they're fouled out from too much gas. Definitely buy you a new set of plugs when you change your jets again...you won't get an accurate reading without them. What kind of modifications do you have done to your banshee?

Hey, I got some more plugs. I have FMF SST's on FMF Power Core 2's, Pro Design K&N, had 260 jets in it, Pro Design COOL HEAD with 21 cc domes, WB boost bottle, V Force reeds, MSD and Pro X pistons? I think the guy wasent sure. He had it build at his buddys shop. Then I got the TORS removed, Renthals with diamond grips, AC front bumper with mud screen, 22 Realtors with stock gearing on ITP .190 rims, FULL GYTR Yamaha skids and a few little goodies here and there, LSR parking break block off, BILLET water pump, and its a 03 LE btw. But do you realy think going up to 270's MIGHT be enough? Because it had 260's in it. and the guy said his buddy jetted it in the middle of the summer when it was 85 at his shop and it ran perfect (I had it out 5 times in 40-50 and it ran great) and like I said its anywhere frrom 0- 20 here on average now sometimes 30. Anyways thanks for your help. I know theres alot of info about this on here already and its anoying to reply to something like this...... Thx -Bob

An approximate guess is one jet size per 15 deg. Just a ball park of course.. but something to go by. If it ran fine at 60 and not at 20, I'd go two jet sizes bigger.

Some other things to check.

There should be a tube connecting the two carbs togehter. That is the choke tube. Make sure you put that back on.

The bowls on the carbs are different. The left bowl should have a brass tube in it for the choke circuit to work properly. Make sure you put the bowls on the right carbs.

If you took the slides out of the carbs, make sure they are in the correct carb. If you look at the slide there is an angled cut away at the bottom of it. That should be facing the airbox.

Maybe you just forgot to put something in the right way.

I agree with Rod, if you change your jets to the 280 mains, and your shee still is acting funny, I'd check the things he mentioned. Sometimes even the simplest things can be overlooked and cause the scenario you're mentioning.

The only "true" way of knowing whether or not you went high enough on the jetting is to check your plugs. To get an accurate reading, you need to run it wide open throttle through 6th gear if possible, pull the clutch, kill the engine and pull your plugs. I'd run it through the gears a couple times before you do the chop, just to put a little time on them. Ideally they should be a nice cocoa color. If they're a light tan and dry, you're lean, go up a size. If they're dark brown or black and wet, you're too rich, drop your main a size. Just for example, I only had to go up one size on my main jet for the cold weather (280 to 290) If you have a digital camera, take a picture of your plugs and post it up here if you're unsure about the results of the plug chop.

Went to a 280 main, tryed starting it, wouldnt start. Check plugs, cleaned em (they were fouled from the 290's) started it up after 5 kicks, idled great for a few min I was giving it small revs, went to get on it gave a very small rev and it just bogged out and died and didnt start again. Today, (next day) went out...... started second kick? maybe first I cant remember then it ran for about 45 sec and just died and wouldnt start. I wanna check my float adjustment, what should it be? I dont have a book? and Could it be the pilot jets or fuel air mixture screws? What kills me is with the 260's in it from the summer even when its 30 it would start up and run and never stall it was just lean. and I didnt touch the fuel air mixture screws but I did hit the float once gently. Thx -Bob

You said you disconnected the tors.....Did you disconnect the 3-wire plug above the left exhaust?? Disconnect the parking brake switch....thats what it sounds like to me....

Hey, I didntr dis connect the TORS, the guy that had it before me did and it ran fine all the times I rode it before. So Ill check but I don't think thats it. Thanks tho. I was online at dynojet.com looked at a chart for 280 main jets and my elevation it it said to move needle clip to 3'rd notch and put fual air screws 1.5 turns out so I'm gonna try to do that and I'll get back to you guys.
