MIABanshee Posted December 25, 2004 Report Posted December 25, 2004 OK guys my clutch basket has side to side play with the gear in the back. I read in the manual that if it has play you have to replace the whole setup. Or another option is to buy a billet clutch basket. I really dont have the money for either of those right now so is there any other options? Thanks Quote
sandman121383 Posted December 25, 2004 Report Posted December 25, 2004 i thought that the gear was supposed to have a little bit of play, how much exactly? i don't know. i'll check my manual and get back to u if nobody has a definite answer. my clutch basket is shot and i plan on gettin a new one after xmas weekend. Nightrider Posted December 25, 2004 Report Posted December 25, 2004 (edited) I'd take th clutch apart and check the screws on the back side of the basket,if those are tight,Check the clutch shaft bearing for excesive up and down/side to side movement. If your getting a graphite or silver color in your transmisson oil and your hearing a growlining from the trans,I'd say your clutch bearing is bad.I had one fail on my 87' and a new bearing cured the growling noise and silvery colored oil.The excess slop in the bearing was causing too much backlash between the gears and actually grinding down the teeth ever so slightly, producing the metal colored oil.As long as you catch it early enough, minimal wear will occur.Mine sounded like a bear was hiding behind the clutch cover, but the teeth only showed the slightest wear. The clutch basket also has a bronze bearing in it,but I haven't seen or read too much about them going bad. This would also cause excessive noise and grinding also. An easy way to check with the cover on is to start up the shee and let it warm up.Now listen to the clutch side of the engine and pull the clutch in.If you notice it gets very quiet all the sudden, you probably have a clutch shaft beaing or clutch basket bearing going bad,or even a loose basket gear.Hope this helps Edited December 25, 2004 by Nightrider Quote
Wallrat Posted December 25, 2004 Report Posted December 25, 2004 All of the stock baskets do that fairly quickly. That's why you should replace it with aftermarket. As far as checking the bolts like nightrider said...good luck! A stock basket has the gear riveted on. Technically you could run it a bit longer but you'll want to upgrade to a new aftermarket basket ASAP. Personally I like the Barnett baskets but they're kinda hard to find. Make sure you change your oil after every ride and you shouldn't cause anymore damage. Quote
superchicken Posted December 25, 2004 Report Posted December 25, 2004 sounds like the rubber cusions in the basket are worn out. Quote

Nightrider Posted December 25, 2004 Report Posted December 25, 2004 (edited) My 01' still has the original basket and is well over 150 hrs on it.I change the oil every 3-4 rides or after a long weekend. Its still like brand new My 87's came with aftermarket baskets. On one of them the screws were not even bottomed out all the way.Turned out the red loctite set in before the screws were torqued down.Luckily the previous owner blew the top-end right away after the rebuild.Saved the basket and gear from severe damage. I assume that you drill out the rivets, haven't had to do it yet with my 01',so I couldn't tll ya,but any aftermrket basket is a good choice,I have a GYTR and a PE and they both look like quality baskets. They used taper /countersink allen bolts. The baskets already have countersunk holes and all of the hardware is supplied with the basket. superchicken Posted December 25, 2004 Report Posted December 25, 2004 its easy to switch the drive gear.you have to gring off the head of the rivet, and drive them out with a punch.my wiseco came with new cusions and the allen head bolts. Quote
Wallrat Posted December 25, 2004 Report Posted December 25, 2004 Here's a link to the Barnett basket ($220 at my local shop): LINK The reason I like those is not only are they billet, but then they also have stainless inserts on the ears to protect from getting notches. Even the Hinson baskets start notching after awhile. The vitos is basically the same as PE and the others...they're just Hinson knockoffs, probably about the same quality as the Hinson. Quote
MIABanshee Posted December 25, 2004 Author Report Posted December 25, 2004 The barnett looks awesome... I'll look into it... thanks guys Quote
fixitrod Posted December 27, 2004 Report Posted December 27, 2004 Those cushions wear fast on any basket. I have a hinson and mine had some noticeable slop after 3 hard weekends. Not a lot, but you could tell there was wear already happening. Just a heads up. The rubber cushions were new and the basket was tight when I first put it in. They still have a lot to go before I'll change them out though. Quote
