i have a K&N filter, unfortunately it has failed, it has failed because i did't pay close attention at the product i bought, recently i discovered a very fine oily layer of sand past the filter, i'm thinking of getting a foam filter (not ot mention the top-end rebuild wich means a lot of $$$$$$), but some say it's air-restrictive and that K&N does a better job in the air-intake department but i say not a good job in the filtering itself. so what it's a wise choice in air filters?

So let's hear those opinions boys!

If you don't get a pro-flow adapter for the airbox, you are going to get sand and debries past the filter no matter what. If you do have a proflow adapter make sure you don't tighten bolts too tight into plastic airbox, it will create a recess on the bolt holes, and adapter plate will not seal well to airbox and you will get dirt in that way(dont' ask how I know that banghead ). Once I got all that straight, k+n has never failed me as long as you keep it "charged"(oiled) and I run no lid.

I would never run any filter on the stock box setup. Also, I'd never run a k&n without an outerwear. I think the foam filters do a better job personally but I like water, mud, whatever. The oils you put on foam repel water to a degree. If it does get wet you can squeeze the water out of it. I realize you may just fun in the sand though. As far as being restrictive, I run a 4mm stroker and it runs fine with a foam filter and ari box.

I too prefer foam over K&N,...have ran the K&N Clamp-on's & they were nothing but a PITA keeping outerwears in good condition on them, cleaning, etc...sucked. Finally switched to the Toomey 2:1 with a UNI filter & outerwear...will never use any other. But then again, I don't ride in water or hardcore mud typically...mostly dune & dirt. IMO...the toomey filter is $50 well spent,...allows you to get ride of the damn air box as a whole, is easy to maintain & works just as good as my K&N's did, but filters better. I've not talked to a single person who runs the toomey setup that has had any complaints. Just my $.02 ;)

which is better, foam or K&n?

The 1 million dollar question. ;)

I feel foam stops more stuff, and that K&N could possibly let small small stuff through if not oiled properly. But overall, I think they're both good, I'd use the foam in a more wet and dirty application and the K&N in more dry sandy applications.

Anything will leak mounted to the stock airbox setup, you HAVE TO HAVE a Pro Flow plate to properly seal. Get one on ebay.

For more info, search, there's loads of this shiz out there.

Here is a good technical perspective on filtration foam vs paper v( click here )s pleated guase (K&N) by Uni Filters It may be a litle bit propaganda to sell uni foam filters but I think the info is pretty accurate. K&N will flow the best but I personally would only use them in the sand with a good fitting outerware and clean the outerware often.

all the foam ones i ever had fell apart on me. i run k and n filters in all my bikes without a prefilter. no problems yet. when i go to the dunes i will run a prefilter fo sho but they get clogged with dirt and make your shit run like shit. i make sure i keep my k and n's cleaned and oiled.

only place i'd ever run a k&n is in the sand or on the road. I dont trust them worth a darn. In sand with an outerwear would be good since sand particles are bigger.

I run in the coal and coal dust would always be in the air tract on the blaster I had after I got done riding it.

For the difference in performance, its not worth running a k&n unless your dragging and have done everything else to your quad you can do and want to get that 1/4 hp extra.

What about running k&n w/outerwears right off the carbs with the airbox completly off. That is for sand riding only. Any opinions??

acording to toomey there is a sonic wave working in the back of the carbs that syncs with the pipe @5,000-7000 RPM's and that's when you feel the pull of the top end, this happens in the tract between the carbs and the air filter, they say "this tract" is short enough already as it is, so if you run your filters right off the carbs you will effectively reduce the tract, altering the sonic wave and thus reducing performance.

these guys (toomey's) spend a lot of time on research and on equipment to find out shit like that, so i have to believe them, plus it makes total sense.

apparently running a K&N without an outwear prefilter is a no-no, so i will opt for that then.

thanks

With the setup I have now I run K&N pods for sand and uni foam pods for everything else. You can pick up a pair of uni pods for $20 shipped and they probably flow pretty darn close to K&N pods. You could run K&N's in moist or non-dusty conditions no problem, but if you got both pods, why bother, be safe and run the foam. The only reason I got the K&N's for the sand is that sand sticks to an oiled foam filter real bad and its even worse when its not shielded from flying sand by the stock air box.

So I installed a pro flow kit in my banshee with the uni filter. Problem is the filter barely fits with only the one inner filter. If you put the outer red one on there is absolutely no room to even fit it all in there. And forget about putting a lid on. Wish I would have know before I got the kit. Not sure what to do
