What is everyones knowlegde on the break in time for a brand new shee? The dealer told me run 2 tanks through it, 32:1, at half throttle. After that he said I could go wide open. Does this sound right?

Your gonna get a large variety of thoughts on this subject.

Basically make sure the cylinders are well warmed up before you start running it wide open. Make sure your jetted properly so you dont melt a piston from a lean condition. How are you gonna run 2 tanks through it at half throttle without letting it sit still and not move? How much fun is riding trails if you have to stay at a certain position. anyone that tells you to let it sit and idle forever or to keep it stationary and rev it up and down isn't thinking. You have a radiator on the shee it needs air movement to cool the antifreeze down.

Also its gonna take you hell a long time to run through 2 tanks of gas on a new shee. I ran mine at 40:1 and never did any breakin shit as far as not exceeding certain throttle positions. Just make sure its well warmed up before oyu go opening it up. If breakin was such an exact science and had to be done a certain way, if done at all, there would be MUCH MUCH MUCH more piston failures on shees with very little ride time. Thats assuming people jetted their shit right the first time.

i agree, when i got my cylinders back from being ported and bored, all i did was get the jetting right, then give it hell. of course i let it idle for like 6 mins the first time i started it up to be sure, but after that i went though 1-4 gears WOT down my street, no problems here! ;)

Right on! I took the shee out today for the first time it ran awesome! I tried not to take it past half throttle much....it was so damn hard not to!

This is from Eric Gorrs web page

10) When you initially start the engine after a rebuild, manipulate the choke to keep the engine rpm relatively low. Once the engine is warm enough to take it off choke, drive the vehicle around on flat hard ground. Keep it under 2/3 throttle for the first 30 minutes. Two common myths for proper engine break-in are; 1) Set the engine at a fast idle, stationary on a stand. 2) Add extra pre-mix oil to the fuel. When the engine is on a stand it doesn't have any air passing through the radiator and it is in danger of running too hot. When you add extra oil to the fuel you are effectively leaning the carb jetting. This can make the engine run hotter and seize.

You mainly just don't want to hold it wide open and rev it all the way out shifting up through the gears. I'm sure your babying it just fine. I'd take it easy for one full tank and then start getting a little more agressive. It will run better and better the more you wind it out and get the cylinders and case "cleaned out" of excess fuel and oil build up. I'd change the plugs after about the second tank.

Thanks guys! I took it out the other day for the second time, burned through my first tank! woo hoo! I cant wait until the first of January...its Toomy t-5, k&n time!!! It should be broken in enough by then.
