64xracer Posted November 11, 2004 Report Posted November 11, 2004 I was just wondering if anybody has used WSM pistons, I have always used wiseco but I will be needing 70mm and they don't offer any. WSM is the only one I have found so far. Anybody had good/bad luck????? Quote
MotulMonsta Posted November 11, 2004 Report Posted November 11, 2004 Piston's are pistons. What makes Wiseco so good is that they're forged, not cast. Forged pistons have less irregularities, metal is denser and expands more uniformally when heated. Cast pistons..crappy ones AKA OEM & Pro-X, their are actually voids or air bubbles trapped inside the metal, the metal itself is weaker, though the pistons are thicker. When they heat up, they don't expand evenly..oh they also weigh more. So, ask em if they are forged or cast..if they don't know..don't buy em. Quote
RNBRAD Posted November 11, 2004 Report Posted November 11, 2004 Woah, I don't mean to flame anybody but that's how rumours and misinformation gets passed along. The last post is a total misrepresentation of each pistons quality's. Sorry MotulMonsta but people need accurate info to make the best decisions. Check the link below, most excellent and accurate information regarding cast and forged pistons. Cast Versus Forged Pistons Quote
duner Posted November 12, 2004 Report Posted November 12, 2004 Good reads Brad, but I,ve yet to see a Cast piston lighter than a Forged as stated.I'm not disputing the article, just goin off what I've seen.I will say though,WSM pistons are JUNK! Quote
RNBRAD Posted November 12, 2004 Report Posted November 12, 2004 Yea Duner, totally agree with that. Of course the forging process has improved tremendously or should I say the machining tolerances have greatly improved. Of course not all forged pistons are equal same with cast. Though much has improved with casting also with pressure die casting allowing close tolerances of .0004 and thats not a typo. If a forged piston could maintian such tight tolerances I feel there would be no need for cast pistons at all. Theres a lot of benefits to gain from such tight tolerances. Quote
duner Posted November 13, 2004 Report Posted November 13, 2004 You know thats what I was thinking also(tighter clearances with cast )I will say when I've ran the cast,my top end was clearly quiter. Also am I right thinking a little heavier piston might help on the torque ? Quote
