The past week my friends Banshee takes a bit to start. Everytime while kick-starting it, it back fires .. making a loud pop sound. After it finally starts, more smoke comes out of one side of the pipes. When sitting in idle, it makes a whacky clunk sound. While riding it, it moves, but their seems to be some lag in power aswell with back fire pops. The bike is worked and was purchased a few weeks ago. The previous owner never change the rings. So Im wondering if new piston rings are needed .. or maybe a cracked reed valve? Any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated.

could be a couple things. Could be a seal (what side is it smoking out of/backfiring out of?)

Could be a reed, pull the carbs and intake off and take a look,

And chances are if its idling, its not a piston probably. A compression test would be a good factor in telling. I had a ring catch my exhaust port and when I would let off the throttle it would backfire and that cylinder would die on me. It was producing enough compression when it was moving fast enough to fire still, but not when I let off the throttle.

I pulled the head and all there was was a little chip out of the top of the piston. I pulled the cylinder and the whole side was chewed up.

Its popping/smoking out of the right side (kickstart side) ... but the other side has lower air pressure coming out of the exhaust :(

get a compression tester from kragen or pep boys for 25 bux and do a compression test.

warm it up for 5 min.....shut it off....pull a plug....put in tester.....gas on throttle open .... kick it till the tester stops moving. do the same to the other side....minus the warming up part.

hope that helps you figure it out.
