Pjw350 Posted August 30, 2004 Report Posted August 30, 2004 Well my stator cover was filled with water and I think my stator is bad. Its runnin on one cylinder sometimes and has absolutely no power. Does anyone have from the manual what the ohm readings are supposed to be. Thanks Quote
J.J. Posted August 31, 2004 Report Posted August 31, 2004 At work now, not close to the manual, but here's a link to BenBB's Electrical FAQ. Check out Q#29 Quote
Pjw350 Posted August 31, 2004 Author Report Posted August 31, 2004 Thanks alot J.J. I tested the stator and my readings were red to green supposed to be 13.7-20.5 I got 30.2 Red White to Green/White supposed to be 94-140 I got 119 this is maybe 2 year old ricky stator 200W unit. A few weeks ago when I was riding I someohow got water in the stator cover and I didnt know it and after 3 more rides my banshee slowly started to die. It started runnin on one cylinder at times and was runnin like crap boggin and stuff. I think Im just gonna try one of those $125 stock replacement units from Ricky Stator. ANyone else got an opinoin on this. Thanks again J.J. and BenBB Quote
BenBB Posted August 31, 2004 Report Posted August 31, 2004 Too much resistance red to green, that's the ignition coil...quick fix would be a new stator AND make damn sure you seal that bitch up, especially that little notch on the stator housing area of the cases between the stator and countershaft sprocket. You might try letting it dry out real good (remove the stator, bring it inside, whatever) and retest it. Electrical probs can be a bitch because alot of times it will come and go, or test fine and still not work. I'm no Electrical Engineer so I don't know for sure, but the higher resistance reading may be a frayed component that shorted and fried, then left a partial connection (sounds real fookin' technical huh?)...the values are close tho so it might be ok once it's dry (ones I've tested are usually way way way off and there's no doubt that it's toast, my last one-stock unit-had a broken solder joint). Good luck. Quote
Pjw350 Posted August 31, 2004 Author Report Posted August 31, 2004 Ya I fifgure just buy a new one 125 isnt bad. I probably could have the one I have now looked at but by the time you send it in and wait and stuff Id rather just have a new one. Quote
ledofthezep Posted August 31, 2004 Report Posted August 31, 2004 I'm running RS's stock wattage stator on the adjustable plate,... advanced my timing +4, no problems and/or complaints. Had to do a little grinding on the stator plate to get it to fit, but no big hassle at all. Quote
J.J. Posted September 1, 2004 Report Posted September 1, 2004 (edited) Pjw, before you buy, might i suggest getting a coupla cans of aerosol contact cleaner (suitable for electronics) and spraying the shit out of those windings and then re-measure. Might get lucky. I'm also no electrical boff, but I would have thought that the resistance would be less in event of a short circuit and higher in event of a poor connection like BenBB said... Anyways, don't take my word for it, I'm just thinking out loud here. Ben, I see you added the link in your sig, thanx man, easier to find now. BTW, where you been at lately, hope all's ok! Edit: Wouldn't the 200W from RS have a higher resistance than the stocker, my thinking is the added length of the windings on a RS is more than on a stocker? Edited September 1, 2004 by J.J. Quote
BenBB Posted September 1, 2004 Report Posted September 1, 2004 Good call J.J., I didn't even think about the resistance being different on a 200W. Pjw350 since you know you got water in there, I think the stator is still the most likely problem, but one that drying out completely may cure or visually inspecting point to a problem (broken solder joint, loose wire, burnt windings, etc.). Your pickup coil tests perfect and from lookin' at 'em they look pretty waterproof so that is likely fine. Talked to Banchetta last night and he had a flywheel failure with some similar symptoms as yours, might keep that in mind IF a new stator doesn't cure the problem, unfortunately I don't know of a way to test the flywheel other than swapping it out like a CDI. Thanks for askin' J.J., I've had my hands full lately, had planned on doing the RZ conversion in August but my future ex had other plans, heh. Oh well, nothing a TT next weekend and an XC in two weeks won't cure, hope you get some ridin' in back home soon too... Quote
Pjw350 Posted September 2, 2004 Author Report Posted September 2, 2004 Well Im leavin to go ridin in tennessee tommarrow for all weekend and only gonna take the yfz450. I have another flywheel in my shop and ill try that one. Quote
