RUNMYTA Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 I am helping a buddy jet his 97 Shee. He replaced his FMF's with T-6's and removed the air box and added K&N clamp on's and carbon fiber reeds. The local stealership did all the work and told him that they only had to go up one size on the main???? He thinks that they put in 280 mains. Right now the bike runs and pulls decent, but with 24:1 oil ratio (break in on new top end) it does not smoke (ever) and one cylinder pops and back fires. What do you guys think the jetting should be?? What about the pilot? Thanks, Mike Quote
lincster Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 DO NOT RUN IT!!!!!! Until you get bigger jets in there. That dealership is a bunch of idiots, they were just following Toomeys instructions, which are jacked up. You did not state your elevation, but let me give you my setup and you can figure out how lean he is from there. I have T5s, stock carbs, no air box, running the Toomey 2:1 air filter. I run at Glamis, about 300-500' elevation. I run 370 mains, 30 pilots and Toomey needles on the 4th clip position from the top. My bike runs AWESOME!!!! I also have Boyesen carbon fiber reeds. You are getting the popping and back firing because it is WAY lean. I would also switch to 32:1 on the oil ratio. I run Yamalube and that is what I run at. Good luck. Hopefully he doesn't have too many hours after his pipe change...... Quote
RUNMYTA Posted August 16, 2004 Author Report Posted August 16, 2004 I am about 1400ft. As far as pre mix I run Motul 800 40:1 he just has 24:1 for the break in. What scares me is that my buddy has run this bike for about an hour very hard!! I am thinking about 320-330 main and 30 pilot, needle on 4th clip should get me close. What do you guys think? Quote
sandgrencivic2k1 Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 I had the t6 pipe kit but with the uni filter, and i ran stock needle on 4th clip, stock pilot, and 280 main, at sea level and i had a nice tan plug all day long. So I dont know why people go with a 370. I just went and got mine ported and they say go a 310, and stay stock with the rest, so it seems like people like running way too rich. Quote
sredish Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 With my experience, the Toomeys like a 290 to 310 or 320 is some cases. Unless you have porting or other big mods, you shouldn't really need more than that. You could definitely try the 330 and see how shee does and work from there, and you probably don't need a 30 pilot, maybe a 27.5, and 4th clip on the needle. All banshees run differently, so it's impossible to say what one machine may be good at. Make sure to read the plugs after you make the change, and don't do it all at once, do the mains first and then move step by step. Lincster, I'm definitely not trying to disapprove your statement, there are some situations where a bike will want more fuel, mine is one of those. Have you ever checked for some small leaks around the boots or intake gaskets? Later fellas. Quote
Big Blue Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 I had 320's in mine with K&n with the lid removed 280's will probably be way to small. Quote
jaysea1 Posted August 17, 2004 Report Posted August 17, 2004 I have t-5's, no airbox, and twin K&N's. Everything else is stock. My elevation is about 1200 feet above sea level. I run 320 mains, 27.5 pilot, and stock needle on the fourth clip position(from blunt end) Runs awesome. If your elevation is close, as stated you should be between 300 to 320 on the mains. Start with a bigger main and do the proper plug check procedure. Run wide open in 5th to 6th gear for a few seconds, then turn off the motor and coast to a stop, then check the plug. Should be chocolate brown, not wet. Quote
jaysea1 Posted August 17, 2004 Report Posted August 17, 2004 When does it backfire? At which throttle position? Quote
RUNMYTA Posted August 17, 2004 Author Report Posted August 17, 2004 It pops and backfires at WOT. Quote

Have you ever checked for some small leaks around the boots or intake gaskets? Later fellas. Yep, I have checked. I don't have any air leaks. I have run this same setup for 3 dune seasons, lots and lots of fuel has been run through the bike. I have had the head off 3 times and everything looks good. Don't be afraid to jet big. BenBB runs over 400 mains on his bike and he doesn't run at sea level. 3 of my buddies all run big jetting on stock bores with the 2:1 or clamp ons. These air filter systems flow ALOT of air. Here is my saying.... "A lean bike will run great, just not run for long." Quote
sredish Posted August 17, 2004 Report Posted August 17, 2004 I agree with that statement 100%. In fact, my machine runs a main way bigger than pretty much everyone else with the same setup. Just the way she likes it. It will run great lean, but like you said, only for so long. Quote
jaysea1 Posted August 17, 2004 Report Posted August 17, 2004 You are lean on the main. I would go buy 320's, 310's, and 300's. Start at the 320's and do the plug check. Make sure...where ever you buy the jets...that they are the correct sizes. Some of the guys that work at the dealers are'nt always on Q. The sizes are stamped on the jets. Don't ride the bike until you make the jet change. Quote
