United Pot Smoker Posted August 15, 2004 Report Posted August 15, 2004 cant you just plug the little tube at the top of the radiator? then you wouldnt need an aver flow tube for the radiator. i was thinkin of plugging mine to make it look a little lighter. then where would the over flow go?... no where there wouldnt bee one. you dont need a breather hose on a radiator right? there supposed to be air tight arnt they? let me know if im wrong because i dont wanna ruin something. do dirt bikes have ever flow tubes out the radiator? i agree fully, you are not supposed to need this thing. its like a boost bottle, just for looks. sandgrencivic2k1 Posted August 15, 2004 Report Posted August 15, 2004 You do need the overflow tube. The reason is because the radiator is under pressure, but when the water and fluid gets really hot it expands, so if you have no where for the fluid to go it can burst your radiator. The bottle is just a catch can so that it doesnt go on the ground, once you get rid of it just run the tube down the frame so if it overheats it will just dribble on the ground. Btw all dirt bikes that are liquid cooled have a overflow tube. That is why a car has a overflow bottle so when it gets hot it has a place for the water to go and then when the radiator cools it will suck back in the water. Hope this helps. Quote

The overflow bottle is just there to top off the radiator. Your pressure relief hose is aimed down towards the right pipe... assuming your setup is stock. Your antifreeze does not go back to the bottle, these bikes are not setup like a car. Quote
Holyman Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 Just so we're clear on this... You cannot plug the overflow tube from the radiator. The expanding coolant will want to open the rad cap to discharge the pressure but the cap won't be able to do that. You have a potential explosive problem. Putting a rubber cap over the tube will only last as long as it takes for the coolant to get hot enough to expand and the rubber cap will pop off. The coolant bottle is there for 2 reasons. 1- It takes whatever coolant is discharged from the radiator and keeps it from spilling on the ground. Antifreeze is very toxic and there is no advantage to having it spill out. 2- The coolant will be sucked back into the radiator when the radiator cools. So you get maximum benefit of a full radiator. You can run without the coolant bottle. There are a couple disadvantages. Once the radiator has heated up, the excess is spilled out and there is then less coolant in the radiator. It will tend to seek it's own level but since it's a royal pain to get to the rad cap to check the actual level of the coolant, you never really know how much is in there. The bottle assures that the radiator is always at maximum level {assuming you have it hooked up correctly}. The bottle makes it easier to fill the radiator and keep track of the coolant level andit keeps the ground from as much pollution as possible. So I kept mine. Quote

I doubt the cap will hold, but if it did, then the cap would probably blow through. The expanding coolant will pressurize the air and have to go somewhere. If you don't run a bottle, then run a line out under your swinger so it can drain if need be. Quote

Could you imagine how hot that shit would be blowing back on you after the cap blew! Quote
fast500#12 Posted August 24, 2004 Report Posted August 24, 2004 i had a radiator hose pop on my KX500 and blow all over my leg and it really isn't much fun . it was about 190 degrees at the time. Quote
