Woody99shee Posted June 27, 2004 Report Posted June 27, 2004 I have an 99 shee that is running at 89-90 psi on a warm to hot engine. Is this too low? Will this result in overheating? I can get it to puke antifreeze on my leg after 3 to 4 miles of moderate road riding. Head gasket is new, so it's not leaking. I'm at 670ft elevation, .020 over. Any input would be greatly appreciated. I'm beginning to have a love - hate relationship with my shee. I'd love to ride her and I'm beginning to hate working on it. Thanks Woody Quote
sredish Posted June 27, 2004 Report Posted June 27, 2004 anything under 100 pounds is rebuild time. Overheating can be caused by one of the following: Lean jetting Bad impeller Clogged radiator No airflow through the radiator Low compression can probably attribute to it by making the engine work harder to do the same amount of work, causing it to heat up. I'd get a rebuild pronto before you screw anything up, then when it's done and your compression is restored, then see if it's still overheating and address it then. While it's apart for the rebuild, put in a new PD impeller and then when putting it back together, fill it up with Engine Ice for a cool 50 degree temp drop. A properly running engine shouldn't overheat, even if it's 105 outside. If it does overheat, there's something going on, maybe minor and it only rears it's head when it's super hot, but when it happens, take the warning signs and do something about it. Quote
Woody99shee Posted June 27, 2004 Author Report Posted June 27, 2004 Thanks for the info. 89-92lbs is on both cylinders. 70 degrees f now. The impeller looks ok, still stock. I have a pd impeller already on the way and a pair of 25 fin inline coolers. The jetting may be ok. I've been fighting with it for a few weeks now. I have stock pipes, pro design foam filter and base, stock carbs, and boyesen power reeds. I'm at 210 on the main with the airbox lid on and slightly modified by accident.. It now has a palm sized hole near the snorkel. The plugs look ok on the porcelain, but the ring that the ground strap connects to is only brown 2/3 of the way around. I read somewhere that this means I am still a little lean? The reeds instructions claimed that it would richen all circuits. 200 mains are stock, how can 210 still be too lean with the reeds? Thanks for the help. Looks like it's time to shell out some more bucks. Woody Quote
Woody99shee Posted June 27, 2004 Author Report Posted June 27, 2004 Sorry about the double post on this issue. I started off with the jetting problems before I discovered the low compression. I think putting my air box lid back on richened it up enough to fix that issue. I didn't want to mix a jetting issue in with the repairs and mods section and get told to take it to the jetting section. One problem led to the discovery of another. Thanks, Woody Quote
sredish Posted June 28, 2004 Report Posted June 28, 2004 Yeah, no prob. Just caught me off guard. You'll want the ring to be totally black. If you have the time, you might consider going up on the mains one more size. But honestly, I wouldn't do anything else until you can get a rebuild. Those compression numbers are low. You get that rebuild and throw a coolhead on there with some 21cc domes, and you'll have some new, previously unused power, and it'll probably run cooler. Later. Quote
Woody99shee Posted July 14, 2004 Author Report Posted July 14, 2004 Well I got the top end done and shee runs pretty good now. I switched to Klotz r50 oil at 40:1. I installed 2 25 fin coolers, engine ice, and a temp gauge. Shee runs very cool now. 160- 170 while trail riding. Takes a while to come up to temp too. Funny thing is my compression per my gauge is still 90 lbs. I checked my gauge with one on my snowmobiles that i rebuilt last year. Sled should be at 125lbs, new gauge reads 90. The shee should be at 120 lbs or so now. DO NOT EVER BUY A $15 COMPRESSION GAUGE SET. I thought it sounded too good to be true. The shee still needed rebuilt even though the gauge was wrong. The piston to wall clearance was huge and there was a lot of scores on the pistons. I ended up with the needle in the stock groove, 210 mains, stock pj's, and the snorkel removed. Seems a little rich on top yet. That's all gonna change is about a week anyway due to new bills pipes. Thanks for all your help! Woody Quote
