I did a top once and put the slides in the wrong way and I was stumped for a day or two then I found this site. Check them again thats what it sounds like to me

What do your plugs look like?

Sorry I haven't got back sooner, but I keep my toys in a warehouse and have been to busy to get over there this week, I'm going over this weekend - plugs looked ok didn't seem too rich or lean according to their color. I am going to check the slides even though I have them marked - I really hope it is something as simple as that - It drives me crazy not to be able to nail this thing down.
