EaCastillo00 Posted June 29, 2014 Report Posted June 29, 2014 i was riding, i had just started the bike like 15 min ago, didnt even run it hard cause my shocks arent working well, and suddenly, it turned of, and there was smoke coming out of the base of the cilinder, im pretty sure it had coolant in the radiator cause i had just cheked it, and it had oil, the mix was done right... what could had happened? maybe the gasket got toasted, i didnt even tried to start it up again, cause i was afraid i might just have burned the engine... i dont know... what do you think... when i checked the water, after it turned off, it was gone... dont know how could it overheat if it had water and oil???? gaskets? what do you think? trickedcarbine Posted June 29, 2014 Report Posted June 29, 2014 First, confirm your suspicion that it's toast with a simple compression gauge. Then do a leak down on the motor. Follow that with a pressure test on the coolant system. This should help in figuring out what caused the burn down. Take photos of everything as you tear it down. Spark plugs, domes, bores, pistons. Take it down to the cases. It's not so bad really. Jut get a clymer manual. Quote

Hey thank you for the advise, i tore it down and thank god it wasnt so bad, my pistons are all right and so are the sleeves, the rings are fine, aparently the gasket making was really crappy, the gaskets totally melted, both the cilinder head gaskets and the ones from the cylinder bases, im so relieved i didnt melt the freaking thing off i just have to get myself a really good gaskets, any advice? sorry couldnt take pictures :s next time i will Quote

There might have been another underlying issue. mmm they were made of laminated aluminun i think and the weren like thick enough... and they were fixed with shellac gasket cement, and i saw that the shellac went into the cool head and some holes in the cool head were blocked so there was some holes in the cool head that weren circulating the coolant right, so i think thats the main reason... im going to make some laminated asbestos gaskets, and seal them with gray gasket maker, i think that should do the trick Quote

Yep, after 15 min of riding -.-, but its allright since it didnt melt the freaking pistons and the rings xD i just have to find some nice gaskets and it should be done, everything else on the bike is in pretty nice shape Quote

WINDYCITYJOHN400 Posted June 30, 2014 Report Posted June 30, 2014 Don't reinvent the wheel. Either buy a proper head gasket or get a head with domes and O-rings. Assemble the motor and check the squish clearance. Then do a leakdown test before firing the motor. Quote
