Don't worry about the tach. You won't use it. There are WAY more things that require your attention rather than looking down towards your handlebars to see a tach. On the road say on a motorcycle is one thing........it's all smooth and you have your own lanes. Dirt riding or duning while looking is just going to get either you hurt or going to cause you to get someone else hurt.

I agree that you wont use it alot. I never use mine, but if you paid good money for it, you want it to work like its supposed to.
