Thom6069 Posted September 7, 2012 Report Posted September 7, 2012 A few years back I had a banshee that would always overheat... It already had a oversized aluminum radiator, megaflow impeller, and coolhead. I flushed the system several times and played with the jetting with no positive results. Finally I installed a 4 inch SPAL puller fan behind the radiator in the bottom left corner, then mounted a battery box where the original airfilter box was and used a switch to turn the fan on and off whenever needed. This system worked great. I have since sold that banshee and build a new one. My new one runs great and rarely has a problem overheating,.. Only when im riding with my in-laws who all have rzrs and like to go kinda slow through trails at little sahara, oklahoma. While its not too big of a problem for me I would like to install a fan system on my new bike, however I would like to make a few improvements. First, I would like to install a thermostat inline to control when the fan comes on and off. Before I would pretty much just turn it on when I was riding and leave it on. However it would be better if it only came on when it was needed, so does anyone know where I might be able to find such a thermostat, maybe off of another atv or a motorcycle... Second, It ran off of a regular atv battery which was not connected to the bikes electrical system. When I was done riding I would just hook the battery up to a low amp charger to keep it fully charged and, even after long three-day-weekends of riding I never ran out of juice for the fan. However, it would also be better if it was tied in the the bikes electrical system to recharge the battery for me. Or maybe I could modify my stator or replace it with a more powerful stator that would run the fan on its own. Guessing this wouldnt happen, or maybe it could at high rpms but not at low rpms, idk... I've heard about people switching over to a DC system, mainly to run more powerful lights, however I am not very familiar with this term or how it is done. Is this something I would need to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated... Quote
DirtDiggler69 Posted September 7, 2012 Report Posted September 7, 2012 (edited) Use the search function and look for DC conversion and your cup shall runneth over with knowledge . And look for a T-Stat switch from another atv or motorcycle. Edited September 7, 2012 by DirtDiggler69 Quote
cattledog Posted September 7, 2012 Report Posted September 7, 2012 the ds 650 has a thermostate switch that you can install into a coolant line easily, and i would do the dc conversion to charge the battery, i think you could do the whole setup for around 500 bucks as i have thought about this myself for fan and lights. fastforworddad Posted September 8, 2012 Report Posted September 8, 2012 Since you are planning on floating the ground on the stator, you will need to get a regulator/rectifier, you can get them from Trailtech. You can got a fan controller from Summit racing, it is adjustable when it comes on and shuts off also with an override so you can turn in on at anytime you want. Overall the dc conversion is not very daunting at all, and you can get the battery box from JD's Customs, he made mine for me. Quote
