KarTek Posted December 1, 2011 Report Posted December 1, 2011 Hey guys, I searched around the forums and all I really get is stuff for sale or intake "boots"... So, I'm interested in doing some MX or trail scrambles and I'm wondering what the required boots/protective clothing is for these activities. I'm sure about boots but what does everyone run? How about protective leathers? What are the official rules? What kind of helmets/face shields are popular? Thanks in advance! Quote
rjdgriff Posted December 2, 2011 Report Posted December 2, 2011 Ok so if you want to ride a banshee here are some MUST HAVES. Knee high boots with steel toes and a hard outer shell. Kevlar gloves. Elbow and knee shells. Chest protector. Neck brace. Back brace. Nut cup. Kidney shield. Safety goggles and full face helmet. Forearm padding. Mouth piece. Better get a roll cage, 12 foot wheelie bar and a seat belt as well. Get all of that and you MIGHT be protected. Sorta. Have fun. Quote

I'm going to hold back the smart ass comments on this one and pretend that you are 14 yrs old. #1 - go buy mx boots. #2 there is no freaking rules to what you MUST/HAVE to wear besides a helmet. And #3- you may be more suited for a 4-stroke. Have a good day Quote

And #3- you may be more suited for a 4-stroke. Have a good day Well, I'm not 14 but I know nothing about the requirements for safety gear above and beyond everyday recreational riding. When I say "rules", I'm talking about for competitions. Boots and helmets are obvious so I'm asking what you all recommend as far as brands/types. Thanks. PS. I think you may be taking what I say too literally. I just put "Banshee" in the title to keep it on topic. I guess I have a really hard time putting into words the questions I have. Jereme6655 Posted December 2, 2011 Report Posted December 2, 2011 dont forget that most tracks will require your bike to be safety wired, tether switched and also have nerfbars WITH heel guards... Quote
lms1977 Posted December 2, 2011 Report Posted December 2, 2011 as above mentioned I would run a tether cord and nerf bars for sure, also you will need a full face helmet with googles if you asre aloud to use tear offs then I would get good gloves riding boots and a chest protector, kee and elbow pads and you should be set to try your first race then you can get more stuff if you like. KarTek Posted December 2, 2011 Author Report Posted December 2, 2011 Thanks guys, these are the kinds of answers I'm looking for! Mine has these little nerf bars that go from the pegs back to the rear fenders. You can't see them in the sig pic because the pegs and bars were off so I could repair the frame when I took the shot. DDQ, that's a great shot of your setup, I can even see your tether setup! Thanks, that's really helpful! Quote

ban99 Posted December 3, 2011 Report Posted December 3, 2011 Here is something that does not get mentioned much and that's a neck brace. I just returned from Buttercup where I had a huge crash into a witches eye, went head first 8 feet down into a hole. My neck brace saved my life and in my opinion is what makes a helmet work to its full potential. I ended up with a broken collar bone and several bruised ribs but would have been much worse without the neck brace. Just my 2 cents. Quote
camatv Posted December 6, 2011 Report Posted December 6, 2011 DDQ is spot on also i know this is a stretch BUT why not GO to an event you plan to race ASK the people that take the money at the start of the race and see what they REQUIRE and RECOMEND> also walk around and maybe even ASK some of th e people there racing in the event what they prefer.. every racing organization requires differnt things and has rules and regulations they require and some are highly recomended. ban99 Posted December 8, 2011 Report Posted December 8, 2011 Ban99, Im assuming you are referring to the hard plastic cowboy collar brace? Surely you arent crediting your life being saved to one of the cheap foam braces that you wrap around your neck under the helmet? Ya, its a Leatt neck brace and I agree the foam ones aren't worth a crap. I never used to be too preachy about safety but I know I would not have walked away from that crash without the neck brace and do believe they should be as mandatory as helmets. However I am not one for over regulating people and feel it is at times best left to Darwin. Quote

This is definitely in my plans. I need to find out more about local races, sanctioning bodies, etc... Quote
