bigblockbanshee Posted September 8, 2011 Report Posted September 8, 2011 (edited) Well its official I just landed a new job working at Sauder Woodworking so now it looks like i will be able to get my banshee even faster then i thought. i have decided that im going to try and get an 05 or an 06. as close to stock as possible. i dont want any port work done just maybe get a single carb conversion kit (if it works let me have some feedback on that) new tires and stuff like that just try to make it a good woods bike. i have heard that they make a +4 timing key those any good? Good call on the '05 or '06. My opinion though, stay away from the 2-1 carb kit and as far as timing goes, get a billet adjustable timing plate instead of the Woodruff key. The stock carbs will be perfectly fine for anything up to about 65 hp, which will take porting to get to that point, and I recommend Chariot Performance for the timing plate set at +4. You'll find the timing plate on eBay for around $50 shipped and it's super nice and easy to switch over provided the 'shee you get has been decently taken care of, just make sure not to strip any bolts/screws and you'll be fine. Member "RootRacing" also handles a lot of Chariot stuff so you can PM him as well. IMO you'll need a 13 tooth front sprocket, a good set of pipes we talked about above along with rejetting, good skid plates, and nice, durable tires. Other than that there's not much more it takes to turn a stock 'shee into a woods machine without starting in on the moderate stuff such as extended A-arms, better shocks, etc... That's how I built mine at least and I'm extremely happy with it. There's not a single obstacle yet that I haven't been able to get over, through, or around that I needed to and where I ride is mostly 4x4 and rock-climbing trails. One thing we didn't mention is an air filter and adapter kit. The factory foam filter and cage is junk because it tends to let particulates through where the cage meets the airbox. I'm running kind of a cheapo kit from Vito's performance that I paid $40 plus shipping for. It comes with a K&N-style filter, billet aluminum adapter with bolts to fasten to airbox, and pre-filter and will completely take care of the shortcomings of the factory unit. edavis2004 Posted September 9, 2011 Report Posted September 9, 2011 First thing I would do it set a budget and see what you can get for your dollar. If all you're doing is bolts on, you should be able to get a lot for around $1,500 or less. A big spend will be pipes ($500-$600) Once you d that call one of the builders on this page, I suggest F.A.S.T. I just got mine back from jeff and it hauls for being a 350. I also spent $4000 though. It was my first banshee build and I was amazed with the results. You're going to spend more on banshee's to get the power where you want it. If you're want a trail bike to spend les, I would look at a raptor or 450. (just my opinion) Good luck! Quote
andrew3160 Posted September 9, 2011 Report Posted September 9, 2011 I have been running Pro Circuit pipes since having a stock motor to a ported 4 mill and it has always had plenty of low end grunt for the trails as well as giving me enough top end to have fun on the drag strip. In my opinion, I think you will like the Pro Circuits. My buddy has FMF's on a stock motor and doesn't like where the power band is. I am no expert by any means, but I can tell you I have been more than happy with the Pro Circuits. The only way I would consider changing pipes is if I was going to be spending more time on the strip and wanted more top end. I have an 89 and it is a J Arm bike. If your not doing a lot of jumping, I think the J Arms add character. You can always beef them up with a set from Stellar in the future. 89 doesn't have a key or brake light, but that can be added easily. Quote
edavis2004 Posted September 9, 2011 Report Posted September 9, 2011 you gave have a good trail motor for less than a $1000. and it will make more power than a raptor or 450. used pipes - $300ish milled/cut head - $50ish porting - $250ish used adjustable timing plate - $50ish reeds for stock cage - $100ish then just use the stock carbs and get then. then you should look at some shocks and possible wider a-arms if the trails you ride allow it. this is where you spend some money. also you cant buy a 700r (never buy a 660r) or a 450 for around $1500 I guess if you want to buy used you could and save money, $1,500 is just a number I added up with some of the bolt ons I had bought for my recent build. I never said you could buy a raptor or 450 for $1,500...I said that for a budget to buy parts... The raptor and 450 are great stock bikes that work great on trials with no mods needed, saving yourself some money if you're happy the way it is. What's wrong with a 660? I had one built by white knuckle racing and it smoked a lot of "built" bikes...it's all about how they are setup... Quote
