speed_freak03 Posted August 21, 2011 Report Posted August 21, 2011 hey, iv been floatin around your site for a few weeks now, so i guess its time to get aquainted with some good ol banshee lovin' folks. ive got a 90 banshee just resently, and im going to take it out to pismo labor day weekend. it has been sittin for about a year, but fires right up and seems to run good. i have not rode it far, just around the yard, and it has good power. my question is , what do i need to inspect for my safety and the bikes longevity? also, its the first 2 stroke ive owned. i know oil to fuel ratio is important, but ive heard drastic differences in pre mix, i was told to run 50:1 in this, but a couple of buddies run their toys at 32:1. what gives?? any and all replys are appreciated....thanks in advance. i hope this is in the right forum Quote
Jereme6655 Posted August 21, 2011 Report Posted August 21, 2011 This is definately the right forum. First thing id do is do a leakdown test and compression test. The compression test will give you an idea of what shape the cylinders are in based on the compression test reading....anything around 100would warrant a rebuild. The leakdown test will help you identify if you have an air leak anywhere. In a 2stroke air leaks are the devil as they will lean out your fuel/air mix causing your motor to heat up way more than it should which can result in holes being melted in your pistons among other things. Oil ratios vary by person....I run 32:1 with amsoil hp injector. Most will recommend 32:1 with a good oil......with HIGH quality synthetics you can stretch it out to 40:1.....but imho 50:1 is too little oil for comfort. I would recomend doing the test I mentioned above and then fighting any suspension bolt and greasing the zirc fittings. Along with purchasing a clymers manual.....it describes all the info you need inorder to repair and rebuild your bike. Other than that......just have some fun on it.....if it breaks then fix it. Hell repairing these things is fun as hell too. Quote
speed_freak03 Posted August 21, 2011 Author Report Posted August 21, 2011 ok, that about covers all the bases. when you say 50:1 is too little for comfort, i had the same opinion, but i also don't know any better. i read about changing ratios, and while it made sence i wasnt sure if it would matter. basically the more pre mix you run, the less fuel there would be , would i have to change jetting if i went to 40:1? like i said im not after the last horsepower, i just want it to last....and i agree, fun as hell to fix...one hell of a machine. Larry's Shee Posted August 21, 2011 Report Posted August 21, 2011 Factory owners manual (1987) recomends 24:1, my son and I run 28:1 in both Banshee and Blaster. Reguardless you have to jet for all your variables. Prop the front end up and check all wear points especiallly ball joints. Then do the same checking swinger and carrier bearings. Look at brake pads, sprocket, chain. Lube all your cables. I would drain fuel tank, clean it, petcock, carbs. If you have stock carbs clean them one at a time as parts are different. Be sure to install choke crossover tube. Clean air filter. When you have carbs apart, record your jetting for reference. Post them up, someone will tell you if your close. X2 on what Jereme recomended. Quote
