BrockMoto Posted May 16, 2011 Report Posted May 16, 2011 What is a clutch lock up or whatever... replacing clutch and curious if i want one? or need one and what they are/do thanks Quote
Fierce Posted May 16, 2011 Report Posted May 16, 2011 Lockups are not replacements for clutches, they are an addition to your clutch. They are to help minimize or eliminate clutch slippage that a high hp motors cause. Quote
Jereme6655 Posted May 16, 2011 Report Posted May 16, 2011 What is a clutch lock up or whatever... replacing clutch and curious if i want one? or need one and what they are/do thanks as fierce said they do not replace your clutch. they are an add on that uses centrifical force to apply extra force to the clutch pack to help it hold tighter to eliminate slippage. until you get up near the 75+ (and sometimes higher) hp levels you do not require a lock-up. There are a few different styles also......ones in which you must use a different clutch cover to clear the added lock-up (which usually is about $300) and there is also a slingshot lock-up which uses ball-bearings and will fit under the stock clutch cover. if you are going to be installing a new clutch i would install a clutch from jeff at F.A.S.T. (farmandsandtoys.com).....they are known to hold alot of power without slipping. You can also run stiffer clutch springs to help slippage. you can either run all stiff (which will also give you a hell of a stiff clutch pull) or you can replace 3 of the 6 springs (off-setting them soft/hard/soft ect.) to give you a slightly stronger holding clutch. BrockMoto Posted May 16, 2011 Author Report Posted May 16, 2011 Yea I think I decided to go with the FAST clutch. Is there a downside to the lockup? I mean if I get a new clutch and put one on and dont need it am I hurting something? Im not sure on my hp I dont have much special so if 75 is ridiculous probably not me lol .20 over, mx port, reeds, cool head, pipes, considering 4 mil would that put me that high? Quote
BrockMoto Posted May 16, 2011 Author Report Posted May 16, 2011 any thoughts here too? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BANSHEE-CLUTCH-LOCK-UP-COVER-BANSHEE-QUICK-CHANGE-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem4aab28de62QQitemZ320699162210QQptZMotorsQ5fATVQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories Quote
Fierce Posted May 17, 2011 Report Posted May 17, 2011 You'll be fine with just a standard or upgraded clutch. I would add a few stiffer clutch springs, as stated above. Lockouts do add rotating mass, which will be noticed more on a lower hp bike. Quote
