Im doing a bit of a winter rebuild, new drive stuff, paint and general refreshment.

I got some Swingarm bearings because i believe my old ones are shot. are they something i could put them in at home or are there specialized tools i would need to do so and would benefit from taking it to a local shop?

i was also going to take the piece that holds the rear sprocket off if i could, how hard would it be to do this or should i leave it on and tape everything real nice in order to paint it?

any help is appreciated.

the "thing" the sporocket it on is called the sprocket hub......it is easy to take off.......take wheel off...then wheel hub on end of axle....take off two axle nuts and that will slide off......you can also take sprocket off of it with the six nuts that go around it and you will just have the hub

the swing arm bearings just slide in where they are.....take the chain off,,,,,,,,,loosen the big bolts that goes through the frame and swingarm.....may need negotiation to come out....be sure not to bust up threaded end of bolt..............then swing arm should slide out......take off dust caps on each side.......there is a spacer inside the swingarm that the bolt rides in.....you need to get that out and the bearings are on each side behind the dust caps..you will see them...you can find a long screwdriver or punch and bang those out.......put spacer back in...throw in new bearings.....grease them up.......and back in it goes

thanks for this info. i already have the swingarm off so it sounds like its just a matter of taking out the old and putting in the new. i had thought i read somewhere that there was a special procedure for putting them in, that is why i asked.

For both of you I would strongly suggest adding grease zerk to swing arm before re-assembly and coat bolt with anti seize so it comes out of sleeve easily at a later date . also add zerk to axle carrier.

just drill somewhere along it and screw one in? or is placement critical?

I put mine in the middle so grease goes to both sides equally. I used a 90 degree zerk so it is easier to get on and it is pointed to the side of the bike at a slight angle for access.

this is what i was thinking, thanks.

got the swingarm bearing section torn apart today. turns out there was NO bearing on the right side, which would probably explain the loose sound/feeling when rocking it back and forth. probably helped contribute to my chain breaking as well. the shaft that was in there is all pitted too. good think i got a new set to put in there, it sure needs it.
