2 Stroke Screamer Posted July 29, 2010 Report Posted July 29, 2010 Hey guys how ya going Ive been looking at installing a cool head for quite some time the shee I'm riding is usually operating at sea level and most days average around 15 deg c through to 30 deg c Just wondering if anyone has any opinions on what brand of head does it for them and what size domes would be best to install considering that the pump gas down here has a max rating of 98 octane . The reason I ask this is Ive heard allot of people saying that after reaching a certain cylinder PSI you have to start running race gas and have your crank welded is this true. thanks. Quote
madjimmax Posted July 29, 2010 Report Posted July 29, 2010 Hey Bro first off welcome to the HQ. If I was you I would get a chariot or a noss head and 20cc domes and you should be OK running pump gas. There are a lot of different ones to choose from I personally run the old style 2 piece vito's hemi head which was made by Chariot who is a sponser of the site. You can also look up alf44 hes also a sponser of the site and can hook you up with a good price on a 1 piece modquad head if thats what you want. Either way good luck and post of some pics of that shee. Oh and yes if you run too small of a dome you'll have to run race gas. I'm running 18cc domes and its a must that I run race gas which can be a pain in the ass sometimes, one because the shit cost $7 a gallon and 2 you just cant get it anywhere. Quote

Yeah I know what you mean about getting race gas I worked as a chopper pilot a couple of years back and even I couldnt smuggle avgas away from the aerodrome which is a shame cause that shit is 110/120 octane. and thanks for the welcome Quote
No Limit Powersports Posted July 29, 2010 Report Posted July 29, 2010 Having the crank trued and welded is a good idea regardless of mods. Cranking compression around 150 would be my max at no added timing for a general rider. You can push it farther but you would be close to the edge. Quote
06specialedition Posted July 29, 2010 Report Posted July 29, 2010 I like the Noss cool heads. Welcome to HQ Quote
SLORYDER Posted July 29, 2010 Report Posted July 29, 2010 Or you can save 200 bucks and shave the stock head. Shave it .020" for premium unleaded. Quote

Sorry dude but shaving a stock head is not even close to the benefits of a cool head. The only reason I see someone shaving a stock head is because they being a cheap ass. Quote

The only reason I see someone shaving a stock head is because they being a cheap ass. this is by far one of the most ignorant comments i have ever seen here....... you saying " the only reason i could see" lets me know you have done 0 research. if you are not looking for a head that has removable domes the stock head is better. A. ask a builder how much cooler a bike runs with a "cool head" he will say it don't B. ask around rather a stock style head gasket leaks, etc they will tell you O-rings are a pain and you have to silicone the nuts, or run capped nut. the only reason i could see someone with a stock bike (not that interested in going all out) buying a cool head "style" is to look cool. which sounds like to me this might fit the reason you got one. a lot of bs to deal with just for a few lbs of compression and a lot of money. 35 bucks to have a stock head milled. wtf do you think they did before someone come up with the cool heads? yeah Quote
SLORYDER Posted July 30, 2010 Report Posted July 30, 2010 one reason i can see going for a "cool" head is the interchangeable domes. Sooooooo Cool head 250 shaved head 35 New domes for the cool head what 75 bucks Used stock head off ebay 40 plus to get it shaved to new specs 35 hmmmmmmmmmmmm You buy that for cosmetics IMO. Quote

Did you here or see me say they run cooler? If you go ask 5 builders what to run I would be willing to bet that they are going to say get a cool head, But I guess you just know more then them. Theres many reasons to run a cool head besides for the cooling reasons that you say just isnt there. People use custom cut domes all the time and that would be a little hard to do with a stock head. And just to let you know unless your using a modquad head leaking really isnt a problem. I've been running a chariot made head for about 6 years now with no leaking or any other real issues what so ever. If you dont think that theyre worth it then dont fucking buy one this is a free country. Take a look around here everybody that is serious about their Banshee is running some sort of cool head. And let me guess the reason you got your panties all in a bunch is because your running a shaved stock head. Quote

SLORYDER Posted July 30, 2010 Report Posted July 30, 2010 If you go ask 5 builders what to run I would be willing to bet that they are going to say get a cool head, Yeah I'm sure it's NOT because they sell them for a huge profit. Quote

I'm not reaching for anything this is just my opinon and thats it. And I never said it was pointless to run a stock head so as far as reading comprehension I guess we both have a problem with that. And again I've had my cool head now for 6 years with no problems. I'm not wanting to argue with you over this and if I offended you I'm sorry dude that wasnt meant to be. But I like the fact that when I go to the hatfield mccoy trail system all I got to do is swap domes and I can run pump gas which is the way to go when your there because you just cant find race gas everywhere. In my opinon it wasnt a waste of money your talking like it was a couple grand, it was only a couple hundred bucks or so I've spent that on a good night at the club. Oh and really dont care what they did back in 87 because to be honest in 87 we had to get up to change the channel on the TV too but you can bet your ass that I have a remote now. There wasnt microwaves in every house in 87 either nor where there Ipods or CDs all of which I bet you probably own today in 2010. Quote
SLORYDER Posted July 31, 2010 Report Posted July 31, 2010 How about this. Shave the stock head AND rechamber for race fuel. 80 bucks. Now buy 2 base gaskets, a little thicker than stock. Now you have race fuel, 50/50 and pump gas "domes" for 100 bucks. Quote
