midlifecrisis Posted May 7, 2010 Report Posted May 7, 2010 Not sure why its leaking, but it seems to be coming from in behind the sprocket at the seal? Not to much to be read in the manual about this area, so anyone know what Im looking at before I take her apart? Id like to have any parts that I need here ready for the split if I need it. Quote
lt500rbigbore Posted May 7, 2010 Report Posted May 7, 2010 most likely your tranny seal if its coming out by your front sprocket Quote
pondtunes Posted May 7, 2010 Report Posted May 7, 2010 I just changed mine tonight, Front sprocket, Kickstarter & Shifter oil seals. Very easy to do, pry them out with a screw driver then press them back in by hand, wipe some lithium grease on them before re-installing.. The sprocket seal required a very large socket and a couple taps with a hammer to fully seat. There are entire bottom end kits available I got mine for like $29 I got a complete oil seal kit from winderosa came with every seal needed to do the bottom end. I didn't change the one at the flywheel because it looks like to properly get it in you would need to split the cases. As far as I know none of the other seals require splitting the cases to do. If you've never pulled your clutch cover before you'll need to drain the oil/water first and I would recommend picking up a new clutch cover gasket because the first time I took mine off it tore. If you do replace this gasket wipe both sides of it with bearing grease to prevent it from sticking and tearing the next time you remove it. Quote

I just redid the crank for my first engine build, I did not want to pull the engine and split them again if Ididnt have to. Quote

Nope, drain the fluids, pull the clutch cover and replace the sprocket, shifter and kickstarter. You MIGHT be able to do the kickstarter without pulling the clutch cover if you had a hook shaped pick tool to get in there Quote

The front sprocket and its seal are one the left side of the bike under the STATOR cover, not on the right side of the bike under the clutch cover. Quote

I was talking about the kickstarter seal which IS on the CLUTCH cover and he MIGHT be able to replace it without pulling the cover but no harm in doing so. He doesn't HAVE to, but if he gets an oil seal KIT which includes ALL the seals for the bottom end of his motor, I recommended to him that he should probably go ahead and replace his kickstarter seal while hes at.. He MIGHT be able to do it without pulling the cover but then again no harm in pulling it and taking a look around in there while hes at it. Maybe go ahead and do the shift star mod as well. Quote
Profilact Posted May 14, 2010 Report Posted May 14, 2010 Check to make sure your shift shaft seal is not the culprit - if it leaks it will appear that the seal behind the sprocket is leaking because there will be oil all over that area. A bent shift shaft will leak even with a brand new seal Quote
J-Madd Posted May 14, 2010 Report Posted May 14, 2010 Loosen chain, pull sprocket off, inspect/replace seal. <5 min job. Quote
midlifecrisis Posted May 15, 2010 Author Report Posted May 15, 2010 Done deal guys, countershaft seal sprocket side was the culprit! Quote
