no air leak the shop did an leak down test. the shop did clean and rejet his carbs and they put 350 mains in there for him. so were not excatly sure what happen. were gonna get jeff to look at the jugs and see if he can clean the port up if it needs it and bore it out. and gt this thing back running.

Take a good look at your crankshaft and rods, this is the kind of damage that I have seen when a crankshaft rod bearing fails and sends the pieces through the motor. Also, if the crank is ok, make sure you get all the shrapnel out of the crankcase before you put it back together. If that head was not milled, it can be saved by having it cut and rechambered. Good Luck.

we looked at the crank and rods. they appear to be good. and it rotates with no dragging or grinding sounds. looks like he shut it down before complete failure of anything else. also he is buy a modquad head from trademark so its just going to be a desk orniment. should we split the cases just to be on the safe side. doesnt look like any pieces of the pistion came off just looks banged up like something got inside the engine. all the rings were intact. also we were told this was a hotrod crank and rods anyway to tell without taking them out. thanks for teh heads up on the rod and crank bearings.

Yeah i second that crank rod bearing failure. My head and piston look exactly the same and it was because my crank rod needle bearing failed and sent the needles up my coolant transfers. You should be able to see if your bearing is missing any needles.

your talking about the bearing that on top of the rod correct not thebottom attached to the crank. if so then all the needles were intact.

Split the cases for sure, that situation sounds exactly like my situation.

When I bought my bike, the crank spun freely indicated by being able to turn it over easily with the kickstarter. Then as I took the top end apart just 2 weeks ago, I realized that the kickstarter wasnt moving anymore. This resulted in me removing the bottom end. Once removed I turned it upside down in the hopes that a chunk of something dropped in by the previous owner might fall out, but it just kept coming. This was the result of a bad crank bearing as well.

Now that youre in there, for piece of mind and with detonation like that happening, I wouldnt hesitate to go further and clean it all up.

there, we go...........i find it hard to believe that my laptop monitor shows more detail, but i guess so......i see no sign of bearing initiated damage there. what i do see, however, is a melted piston throught the exaust side, completely blowing the ring land out and circulating debris, and probably peices of ring through the chamber. i would check for blocked jets/passages, and glazing on the carb body where it seals to the intake. that is one area that a leak-down will not find, and i have experienced it showing up once the rubber warmmed up and was no longer cold and stiff. i always scuff the carbs before i install them to prevent it happening again. i also agree, that you should make sure everything is out of the crank area, and probably spec the bearings out, too.

No, we are talking about the needle bearing that is on the lower end of the rod, that the rod rides the crank with. You should get a book and check all the clearances for the crank and rod, you can check rod side play with the motor in the bike. There is definite damage to the head from metal pieces fly around in there, that means that there could be some in the crankcase and you need to get them out. I would split the cases and see what you have if you don't know the history of the bike and clean everything up.

Thanks for all the input guys, we just split the case today and did find some metal in the bottom. We are gonna clean everything out completely. And im putting a modquad head on and getting the ports touched up. Anything else we should look at while we have it apart or anything else we should replace?

all the bearings also looked nice and clean and spun freely. very clean engine inside except the few smal peices of metal we foud from teh piston other then that very clean. time to get this bad boy rolling.
