Projecthellraiser Posted September 12, 2009 Report Posted September 12, 2009 I recently bought an engine from a good friend. He installed all new pistons, gaskets, and everythings good to go. Problem is I ran a leakdown tester and the crank seal on the stator side is leaking. Im wondering since the seal has a raised lip if it can be pressed in while the cases are together. or do I need to split them? thanks Quote

Attempting to press them in will more than likely damage the seal. Time to split 'em! Quote

Damn I thought so as well. well I guess Its time to remove the bottom case without dropping out the crank. thanks again Quote
locogato11283 Posted September 12, 2009 Report Posted September 12, 2009 i have always split the cases to install new seals, but have heard of people doing it without splitting them.. that said, chances are if one needs replaced, they both do. youd be money ahead to just tear the bottom end down and replace all the seals. that way, you know its good to go. rubberneck Posted September 12, 2009 Report Posted September 12, 2009 if it were me i would tear it all the way down and weld the crank (if it wasnt already done.) I have had 2 cranks separate on me. The first grenaded. I just tore down my other bike last week and the left side had started to move. (had way too much end play on the rod) and overall width of crank was beyond spec. Pull it down now inspect/weld it and save yourself some drama later on Quote
