HI ALL. I AM NEW TO THE BANSHEE WORLD WITH MY RECENT PURCHASE OF A BONE STOCK 2002 BANSHEE. I WANT TO BUILD A 1/8 MILE ASPHALT DRAG QUAD. I RECENTLY BUILT A 1986 TRX250R THAT IS NOW OVER 350CC AND WASNT HAPPY WITH IT. THE 250R IS NOW FOR SALE TO BUILD THE BANSHEE. MY QUESTION TO YOU GUYS IS WHAT IS THE BEST ROUT TO GO WITH THE BUILD FOR MAX PERFORMANCE ON A BUDGET OF ABOUT 3000 DOLLARS FOR THE MOTOR. I WAS THINKING A CUB BUILD BUT THERE ARE SO MANY TO CHOOSE FROM. I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE A QUAD IN THE 6 TO 7 SECOND RANGE OR FASTER IF POSSIBLE. THANKS IN ADVANCE

For a cub and cleanup or mild port work is around 900. So which leaves you only 2100 left to play with. I would go override tranny, cool head, lockup clutch to start with. You will be suprised how fast that 3k will go when building a drag motor. Don't forget the insurance pancake bearing for your clutch you don't want to spend all that money and then have to split the cases again to fix the clutch rod welded to the ball.

Kaos makes a good point. Once you get started your banshee will "take your wallet hostage" (quoted from Savage420). Welcome to the HQ, you'll find everything you need to know here.

If you only have 3K save your money and wait.

3K will barely get a motor done.

That doesn't include a longer swingarm, a wheelie bar, tires, gearing, etc.

You could build a big motor with all the potential in the world, but if it's not getting the power to the ground, it does you no good!

I have around $3,400 in mods on my duner and I would bet it would be in the range you're talking if you could keep it down.

Ported stock cylinders are gonna be your best bet, cost wise.

That and don't be afraid to look for good used parts.

I shot a little over 1500 towards Kevin for porting, pistons, crank, etc, etc, already had the head.

Just over 200 for the carbs on ebay.

Just over 200 for the front shocks

275 for the swingarm

It can be done.

These guys make a good point though, dont blow your whole budget on the engine only. Even a mild running 4mil will make your life miserable on a stock swinger lol. Been there done that.

Sell your shee, buy one thats done you will be much better off,if you plan on investing three dbl it,my boy has a 421 clean up ported cub for sale allready set-up for asphalt drag, tires and all, motor has about 5 hrs on it total, pistons and clearances all checked by Jeff at FAST,all new everything, his swing arm was 1000 all said and done.He wanted 6000 for it but im sure he is negotiable something like this would benifit you because at least your starting out with something,my bike is an 06,with the sticker price I have well over12k in it and im not done by far,its an addiction, but knowing what i know now I would have bought something close and built on it let someone else take the hit.Just my opinion

thanks for the input guys. i really want to put together my own quad instead of buying one. it would mean alot more to me if i built it myself then bought it even if i do have a limited budget. but 3000 is just my parts budget for the motor. i have a person that will take care of all my labor and port work for very little $ or none at all. the frame will have its on budget as far as swingarm ect. i will be watching for decent used parts. i am not above that at all. but i want to get this done thru my own blood sweat and $$$$$$$$$$$$$$. i truly love working on my machines almost as much as i like riding them. i dont know if that makes alot of difference but let me know.

Well I can certainly appreciate building your own motor instead of buying it.

It does cost more...but you know what went into it.

Kudos for realizing some used parts are just better to have vs. buying new.

I'd never buy a used piston, but I'd sure as hell buy a used carb, etc.

You get what I mean.

Glad you understood what we were getting at and you're up to a challenge. For your purpose, my advice is just have you guy clean up any casting flaws in the cub, should you go that route.

A 4 mil cub setup right should have no problem running in the 7s in the 1/8 mile. 6 is possible, but that's work on the chassis, setup, tuning and overall weight (rider and bike) It can be done, but setup halfway close 7s should be no problem.
