I have an opportunity to buy what he says is an 85 and 1/2 Yamaha Tri-z three wheeler. It is the frame (straight), exhaust, cases, crank, really good wheels and tires(worth 100 bucks) He wants $150 for everything (include a box full of spare parts) I dont know much about these and I dont even know if they make and 85 and 1/2, but I do know that they can haul ass. I bought my shee for 500 bucks and I have completely restored it myself .....from wheels to handlebars and EVERYthing in between! I was over my head with the shee project but you guys on BHQ saved me time and time again with great resolutions to my problems....

with that said how hard is it to build this machine? Are parts rare? This sounds like a no brainer but the Tri-Z is a couple hours away. I think I should make a weekend trip outta going to get it ... haven't told my ol lady yet ... she says I drag more shit home than our dog!

But give me some feedback fellas ... is it gonna cost me out the wazoo to bring her back?

That sounds good! I wonder what changes I would have to make for the motor to fit. I gotta good buddy who has made some kickass motor mounts for swaps. If you ran that setup would you run 2 in 1 on everything..carb/intake even exhaust? that sure would wig some of my buddies out not knowing what they're racing

Yeah dropping a shee motor in a Z frame isnt just a few motor mounts.

More than likely, You will have to cut and reweld the down tubes, extend the cradle, relocate the radiators with a larger size, and come up with a top mount fuel tank, or drill and port the banshee jugs for a vacumn line to run the fuel pump on the under the seat fuel tank found on the tri-z.That would be bare minimum mods needed.

For 150 bucks, that deal sounds like a bargain.

Parts are hard to get for the Z. Many hard parts are discontinued. Trans gears, jugs, cylinder heads, clutch components, like the pushrod and adjuster screws etc....

There are parts out there but many times you have to settle for used. Lately though, many aftermarket parts have been starting to be made from private builders. Coolheads, V force reeds, Big bore kits, Swingarm bearing kits, things that were very expensive and hard to find at one point. But as with any small company producing on a limited basis, you have a long wait time on some of these parts. But what can you do if they are the only one making them?

I have built and owned 3 of them, and starting a build on the 4th right now.

Z's are awesome trikes, but they are tempermental if they have not been maintained.

They had weak foot pegs and mounting areas for them, the water pumps have a high failure rate as they get old.The plastic impellar falls off and overheats the engine. They are not counter balanced in the engine, so they vibrate quite a bit. Every few hours of riding you have to tighten bolts back up on the machine as they rattle loose, even with loc tite.

Many parts will transfer over to them though. 2004 YFZ rotors can be used, A lot of 86 YZ 250 engine parts can be used, Banshee rear axles and sprocket hubs work on them, Banshee regulators, Blaster coils Etc etc..I can go on and on.

:stupid:

I am part of the trike community, and parts are getting very difficult to find. If anything, buy it and sell off the parts. Every part in that box is needed or wanted by someone...

He says he has every part to build AT LEAST 12 trikes .... I put pics of the roller in this forum they are under TRI-Z pics.

I have a question for you, will a yz 250 motor go straight in the trike?

tri-zs are cool. if you can ride fast and climb big hill's on a tri-z you can do it on anything.finding a decent pipe for one is a project in it self.
