GA shee Posted February 15, 2009 Report Posted February 15, 2009 Im wanting to powder coate my frame. But I have read when ypu get ready to do this that you should lighten the frame up. What are you removing to do this? Quote
quikshee Posted February 15, 2009 Report Posted February 15, 2009 Extra tabs that are used to bolt things to, there are certain ones you can remove. For instance: The tabs that the stock metal nerfs bolt up to can go and fender support tabs (if you have shaved plastics). I would imagine there are a few more but I can't think of anymore off the top of my head Quote
GA shee Posted February 15, 2009 Author Report Posted February 15, 2009 When i tear it down the rest of the way im going to cut the plastics. motor locked up on me. time to upgrade. Quote
278 Posted February 15, 2009 Report Posted February 15, 2009 Its also going to depend on your type of riding... trail or MX you just want to remove a few tabs here and there, but dune and drag you can remove alot more. Best bet would be to get all your parts and make everything the way you want it, such as cutting the fenders and removing the TORS system, then mach it up and see what your not using. If you dune or drag and want to cut a little more off after this get a hold of Tim at Steller Machine and Performance and he can help you as to whats safe to take off Quote
swrbansheeboy Posted February 16, 2009 Report Posted February 16, 2009 (edited) kinda depends on your definition of "lightening" we usualy cut off all the tabs for anything that's not currently bolted to the bike, i've even hacked off the headlight mounts on a couple guys bike's. some of the old school draggers used to lighten there frames by drilling holes all over the frame. you can even chop the back end off and add a lighter sub-frame. like i said, it all depends on what you consider to be lightening your frame. i usualy just do all the tabs for the stock pipes, the pins for the air box and grind down and weld up the motor mount tubes. re-weld where the factory missed and smooth everything out. basicly loose everything you dont see ever using again and dress up whats left.... ultimately your not losing much weight and unless your dragging you'll never notice the difference, it's more for aesthetics on a dune or trail bike...
