Pull the clutch cover, clutch and basket. Check the shift shaft where it turns the star ive had them mess up on me. You don't need to split the cases unless the problem isnt in the shift shaft.

was trying to fix one problem and i ran into another. The bike is stuck in 5th or 6th gear, not sure which one. how do i get it out? will i need to split the cases?

i had on do that to me last year and it ended up being the shifting forks

Will it shift between 5-6 or is it just stuck in one? I had my eccentric adjuster break of and keep it from shifting properly. there was also enough play between my sidecover that the shift shaft popped out of the star and reengaged it funny to cause the same thing (stuck in 5/6). Either way you'll have to pull the sidecover.

its just stuck in one. Ive been having problems with it miss shifting and going into neutral when i shift between 2nd and 3rd, and between 3rd and 4th. does anyone here think i need to grind the points on the shift star?

i think your getting ahead of yourself.

as others have suggested pull your clutch cover and inspect your shift shaft, as max said you may have just sheared the adjuster off. if so you can replace it without pulling anything, it's a bitch but it's alot easier and quicker than pulling the clutch assembly. i've broken the tab on the end of the shift shaft in half before also.

either way pull the cover, grab a flashlight and check it out before you start getting into pulling everything apart yet. you can tip the bike up on it's side too kepp from draining the oil but if you need to pull the shaft out you will need to drain it. otherwise all the oil will drain out of the hole where the shaft goes and usualy get all over your shoes. done that a time or two....lol
