OK... took the bike to the local Yamaha Dealer here. Pulled the bike apart, stator cover, clutch cover, exhausts off and checked inside both cylinders with a bore scope etc. All seems to be fine and he could not fault it. He made a note with Yamaha so if anything adverse happens with it relating to this issue, it will get sorted out under warranty.

Anyway - I was happy with that!

Got home and went for a ride, and would you believe it I found this stupid noise!

Once it's nice and hot, the rattle begins - so as a last ditch effort I put my foot on the gear shifter/lever, put a bit of weight on it and GONE! Give it a bit of a revv and it appears that I've isolated the sound.

Thing is, the shifter itself is on really tight and is not loose at all. Could it be the shaft that it is connected to? This would explain why I could hear it on the other side (kickstart side).

does the kickstarter rotate in and out easily? usually when the kickstarter rattles, its because the spring is worn out or the ball is wore down. but if yours is brand new, it should be in good shape.

Hi guys,

Thought my first post on here might have been a little more cheery..... however, I think I have a problem.

Two days ago I picked up my first Shee - a 2009 Banshee!

All was great and I have been having a ball over the last couple of days. Since I've picked it up I would have done less than 5 hours riding.

The problem is, is that it appears to have developed a bit of a rattle/noise in the right hand side.

Symptoms are as follows:

- Noise appears to be coming from the kickstart/transmission/carby area.

- Noise only appears to occur in the lower revs. When I rev it up, I can't hear it. However when the revs come down, the bike seems to vibrate and this is when the sound is evident.

- When riding along and the bike is under load, I can't hear it. But when I slow down and revs drop, I can.

- Noise isn't transmission/speed related. Noise appears to be engine/revs related.

- Clutch in/clutch out..... doesn't matter. Noise is still there.

- The noise isn't there when the bike is cold. It is only there when up to operating temp!

- I've checked fluids and everything appears to be ok. (Gearbox has oil).

- I've checked a lot of other things that could be rattling. Have used screwdriver to try and isolate it but haven't had much luck. I have read about the issues some guys have with the kickstarts, but it doesn't sound to be isolated in that area. It's very close though.

Since I've got it, I've run 40:1 because I was told to by the dealer. All in all bike still goes very very hard and rides fine. Just makes this weird fucking noise that I can't get rid of.

Would take it apart but I am a little hesitant as it is only two days old!!

To fast track things I have taken a couple of videos so hopefully someone can shed some light!

This is a vid of the bike on the handbrake/rev limiter. The rattle is very noticable:

This second vid is when the motor is free revving. Noise goes away in the higher revs, but as revs drop, noise comes back:

Apologies for the long post. Just paranoid that if I keep riding my bike it will explode!

Cheers people,

Dan

Theres NO WAY in hell that motor should shake and vibrate like that. Take it to the dealer you bought it from and have it fixed! They hire all kind of monkeys to put them together. Someone fucked up big time dont let them fuck with you, that sound and shake is whacked!!!

Ohh snap just listened watched youre vid again, pull the fly wheel side cover off, make sure the nut is tight, ive heard that sound before and that is what is was. wont hurt to check and would explain the nasty rockin of the motor. Let us know

Everything (without cracking the motor open) has been checked. So I've been told anyway. Yamaha are adamant that there is nothing wrong with it. The engine anyway.

After doing a bit of digging around though, it seems to be the gear lever, shift cam or something along those lines.

If I kick the shifter up or down, and keep my foot on it, the noise is gone.

I can see the shift shaft/cam move a in and out a bit when revving... probably 1-2mm.

I need to emphasise that it is not the gear lever itself that is rattling. It is the shaft that it is connected to.

Could this be the problem?

You need to pull the stator cover and see if the flywheel is tight.

I've heard that noise before and it sounds exactly like a flywheel loose. Goes away when revving too.

I would raise ABSOLUTE F'N HELL until they fixed it. Something is not right.

You need to call corporate if the dealer won't help you

Thanks for the advice guys!!

Flywheel has been checked 3 times now and nothing appears out of the ordinary. No play at all!

I do have good news though I guess... I have definately isolated the sound.

It is this little bastard....

shiftshaftle3.jpg

Whilst replicating the sound, I put one end of my screw driver onto the end of the shift shaft (outlined in the pic), and it was very very loud.

- When I put a bit of weight on the lever (as in shifting down and holding it down), it shuts it up.

- When I grab the lever and pull it upwards (as in shifting up and holding it up), it shuts it up.

- If I pull the lever side to side, or if I hold it still, it knocks.

So whatever it is, it's being caused by this stupid shift shaft thing.

Maybe I got a shit shaft that hasn't been machined to the correct tolerances and thus is knocking in the case or something? Who knows!

Whatever it is though, it's definately coming from this thing.

Now I spose I have three options:

Option 1 - Take it to the dickhead dealers who clearly have no phucking idea. End of the day, an apprentice who has absolutely no idea will probably work on it. To give them a bit of credit though, you can't replicate the noise unless you ride it and ride it HARD! Sitting on blocks in a workshop running it through the gears doesn't work. We've tried this. If only everyone had a dyno!!

Option 2 - Buy a new shift shaft kit from somewhere and attempt to do it myself. Can't be that hard I guess?

Option 3 - Ride the fucker into the ground and wait for something to happen. The old "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" routine.

On another note though - big thanks for everyone who has added their 2cents. It is greatly appreciated and has been a huge help!
