My girlfriend has a 2002 Banshee, she rides it pretty timidly and we were at Glamiz for thanksgiving and after riding for about a half hour she got stuck down in a bowl, I tried helping her and her bike acted as if it was taking off in second, we couldn't get it into 1st. So in the sand it was pretty impossible to get it moving. After trying for a bit her clutch went out and we couldn't get the bike in nutrual. We had to take the chain off to tow it back to camp. After taking it apart, the clutch was pretty fried.

Last week I put new clutch in it and and I went to test drive it and went to take off and it did the same thing, was taking off in 2nd. I managed to get it going and after a few minutes of riding without first gear, but I had 2nd and 3rd grear. After about a minute of riding it just dropped into nutrual out of the blue and rolled to a stop. I decided to give it another try and I shifted it down and finally got 1st then the first 3 gears worked fine, after a couple minutes of riding, all of a sudden the tires locked up and stalled the engine, now the whole transmission is locked up. I can't even kick start it, I had to take the chain off to move it.

Someone else said it might be the shifter star coming loose... I have been surfing this forum to see if there is someone else out there with this problem. I have a service manual and I'm pretty mechanically inclined and have rebuilt engines before, but this is my first Banshee experience, besides changing the clutch. Does this sound like an internal thing, in the transmission? Was hoping to go riding this weekend, any help with this would be appreciated.

Thanks, Alan

i would think internal bc i dont think that a lose shift star would lock up tranny it make b the would cause of ur problem but if its locked up its most likely internal IMO i would check all the moving shift parts under the clutch cover/case and make sure there all intack not loose, bent, or broken. then if every thing is good there i would check internals shift fork n shit ..... but im no professional ...... how bad is it locked up it wont move at all? will it even rock back n forth a inch or two?

Check the shifter adjustment.

They Clymer manual will tell you how to adjust the eccentric properly.

Next...look at the basket, inner and outer hubs for the clutch, make sure they're good.

Inner and outer hubs are cheap, I use OEM....and replace them every year or so.

A good billet basket is a good investment as well.

Normally, though, a worn clutch will cause it to slip, creep, etc. Rarely does it cause it to not come out of gear.

i don't have experience in banshee transmitions, but in automotive and tractor aplications, it sounds like internal shifting components wore out so badly that 2 gears are engauged simotaneously, because there was too much slop to completely dissengage the first gear before engauging the next. or something came loose, getting stuck in the gears. either way, if the drive sprocket is locked without any amount of play, i would be looking internally

Sounds like it could also be a worn or bent shift fork, either way if you don't see something under the clutch cover you will need to pull it apart. Sounds like you shouldn't have any trouble, it's not that hard once you get to rippen and tearing

Thank you guys for your inputs! I took the clutch cover off and did not see anything wrong, so I pulled the engine and broke the bottom half apart. The Drive axle and the Main axle were frozen, after some looking, I found that the 5th pinion gear on the Main axle had two broken teeth and also had welded to the main axle. I am purchacing the main and drive axle off ebay and will be putting it back together next week. The shifter cam and shift forks looked fine, not much wear and are not bent or broken. I attached a couple pics.post-31036-1231022613.jpgpost-31036-1231022625.jpg

Thanks again for your help. I might be asking for more when it comes to putting it all back together.
