Timing adjustment

Hi, I just purchased a new Ricky Stator with an adjustable timing plate. RS says to put the timing on 0, Others on this forum say to put it on +5. Where should I put the timing and why? This is a stock 1988 Banshee 350. I'm new to the Banshee and engine repair world.

if you have no upgrades i would leave at 0 untill you start adding aftermart parts then i would put the timing at plus 4. dont know if any one else would doit that way but thats what i would do. the more you advance your timing the faster the spark witch would burn more gas so if you had bigger carbs on the bike you would advance your timing if iam wrong some one on here will correct me

at 0 you could run shit gas still and not have problems other than the fact that you're running shit gas. if you increase timing, you have to run higher octane and make sure you are more tennative to the fuel. they say 0 so that you are liable if you detonate from running 87 octane +5 and stock jets. but i wouldn't worry about changing it untill you start messin with exhaust and carbs/intake. i would worry more about whether or not that rs is gonna shitcan on you, or even work in the first place- just the word on the streets.

Put it on +4 and no worries... Get an aftermarket head or get your stock head milled by someone competent for an even better hit than what the timing advance will do for you.

I think advancing your timing is one of the easiest, least expensive, mods you can make to your bike, you should be running 93 octane fuel anyway, it is one of the first mods i like to make to a bike. + 4 is a very good starting point.

I think i'll leave it at 0 degrees since i have no mods and it has more than enough power for my needs.

o hey, don't get me wrong, i would advance maybey +2, but that's cus i can only get 90 octane pump gas. if you run 93 octane anyways, go ahead for +4, because 200 watts takes a little more to turn anyways(if you run high watt lights) which is why i assume you're running a 200 watter anyways. i was just letting you know why they said 0 degrees. then again, if you're happy with it now, and want a little free power later, you know what to do :thumbsup:

Why would they make it adjustable up to +10* if you were supposed to keep it at 0*. That's just their disclaimer.

I wanted to visit with the banshee crowd, been working on race engines since 9 yrs old now 71 owned my own shop for 5 yrs raced for several yrs. Point is you on this site sound like u have your time hands on before speaking on this site! So many times I see people say first I've done this and teaching others how to do project .
