I have a interesting delima with what appears to be a base gasket leak up front. When running hard it pours oil out up front onto the exhuast. Question is this a sympton of something other than a simple gasket leak or something more (Blown head gasket or Overheating). Then if it is the base gasket can I replace it with out pulling the entire engine down?

If your base gasket is leaking then you need to pull the top end off and replace it.It is a easy fix just takes some time.If you need some pointers just pm me and I can walk you through it.JB from Lowbuckracing

Couldn't remember if the tranny stays in the bottom of the case or the top half. Been awhile since I split the case but just read the manual and I remember now. This really stinks to tear it down for a oil leak but appears have no Other choice. Would you reuse the piston rings since they only have about 3 rides on them?

I would not split your case if there is oil on you exhaust i doubt it is i coming from your case where it splits apart if you had a leak you would be loosing compression and your bike would run like crap.My money is on the rubber o ring in you exhaust where it hooks up juggs/barrels these are really cheap and a easy fix.And yes the tranny stays in the bottom of case when you split it and hell yes i would reuse the piston rings

try not to let the rings rotate while there out. they will have to reseat if they do.

how are they gonna rotate with the guide pin in the piston to keep them

in place ? There just isn't that much play in them once compressed into the bore.

Check THIS out. If you have the same problem, I would suspect a leaky exhaust... :ermm:

It is definetly the base gasket because I seen the oil coming out and when I first checked the oil it was basically empty. The other reason is when it burns on the exhaust you can definetly tell what type of oil it is (Not two stroke).

This was my concern if I have a bigger problem than just a gasket. Just put a new rod kit in this thing about 8 months ago so always worry when something like this happens especially how picky some two strokes can be.

I am sure you know that transmission oil does not and should not enter the crank area of the engine. I do not think there is any way that much transmission oil can be leaking from the base gasket without burning an excessive amount of oil as well...

Now that you got me thinking you are right the tranny oil isn't even suppose to be in the front of the engine. Will need to dump the oil and see if there is gas or water is in it allowing to seep through the crankcase halfes since it would thin it out. Still know it was gear oil on the exhaust because you can smell it and man was it smoking bad because it was blowing right on the pipes. Then after refilling it and riding for about 15 minutes normally it never did it again. Might be a simple problem like carb problem (I Hope).
