gearbox Posted November 10, 2008 Report Posted November 10, 2008 Got my first Glamis trip of the season in a couple of weekends ago and for some reason my clutch cover gasket seemed to suck down and cause a nice leak over the top of the case. I was able to patch it and finish out the weekend with only a small drip rather than a gush but I wanted to know if this is something common that happens for a reason or just a tired gasket that needed replacing. If there is nothing to worry about and I just need to replace the gaskets and seals on the cover does anyone have any reccomendations on a gasket set or should any set do? Are there any other things (mods or checks) I could or should do while I got the cover off? Quote
speed-racer Posted November 10, 2008 Report Posted November 10, 2008 I've never had a problem with mine (even reused it a couple of times). I can't think of anything that would have caused it to go. I'd just replace it and any kit should do. Quote
THE GRIM RIPPER Posted November 10, 2008 Report Posted November 10, 2008 I've always used Cometic Gasket kits.... They are always a good fit and good material. And While your in there I would check your clutch basket for any grooves where the clutch fibers teeth slide in. Also check the little flat head, off center shift shaft adjusting screw... Make sure it is tight. Now would also bee a good time to take your shift star off and modify it... If you want you can mail it to me and I'll do it for ya, that is if you are not inclined Quote
travis6767 Posted November 10, 2008 Report Posted November 10, 2008 if you replace it you should just do a little visual inspection , and check the kick starter idler gear make sure the bushing is good and you could put a aftermarket water pump in it since you have to drain the coolant , and make sure the oring on the coolant hose is in good shape, and i like the cometic gaskets ive had really good luck with them Quote
gearbox Posted November 11, 2008 Author Report Posted November 11, 2008 Thats what I was hoping to hear about the broken gasket not being a sign of any other problems. I am going to go ahead and order the full Cometic gasket set cause it never hurts to have extra gaskets around, and I am also going to go ahead and replace all the seals and o'rings. The water pump impeller is now on that list as well (either Vitos or a pro design). I am curious as to the shift star mod though Grim, is it something I could do? I build transmissions for a living so I am sure I would have the tools but is there a how to on it? I feel dumb asking this stuff but I'm a newbie to quads and esp 2-strokes. I went from never owning one to having 3 Banshees in less than a year. I may be addicted. Quote

And yes Im sure you'll be able to mod the star yourself..... Its obvious what needs to be done when you look at the star, Just research untill you find a pic of one already modified so you have an idea how far to grind as its pretty hard for me to explain with no measurements. Just stay away from the neutral galley. Use a bench grinder to take most of the material away (EVENLY!!) and then once you've shaped it pretty good use a right angle die grinder with a 3M cookie (Gasket remover) and really smooth it out.... Make your humps smooth and flowing Quote
Screaming Yellow Zonker Posted November 11, 2008 Report Posted November 11, 2008 One of the most common problems of a blown gasket or seal is the vent being plugged. Pull the vent out and make sure it is clear. Quote
gearbox Posted November 11, 2008 Author Report Posted November 11, 2008 (edited) Thanks for the advice, I was leaning towards the pro design anyways. I am gonna search for a good pic of that star and take care of that as well. I'll have to find someplace to order it all from now. I am also gonna try to strip the paint off the cover while its off, just to play with the looks some. Edited November 11, 2008 by gearbox Quote
gearbox Posted November 11, 2008 Author Report Posted November 11, 2008 The vent was one of the first things I checked and it was fine, it was just odd that it didn't blow the gasket out like you would expect, it seemed to pull or suck it in. Quote
