So, I bought a 1999 Banshee over the weekend for $1,500. Came with an extra set of rims and paddles, helmet, boots, pants and jersey.

The bike has almost new FMF Fatty

So, since I got so many responses to my last post, thought I would add to it lol.

I was going to keep working with the jets, trying to get them worked out, then I figured, well, let me check the compression.

The left cyl was at 107 PSI, the right cyl was at 110 PSI.

So, I came to the conclusion it was time for a rebuild.

I tore the motor down, got the pistons out, and to my surprise I had a crack in one of them, at the bottom of the skirt.

So I ordered a top end kit for $186.

Does anyone know if this will make the bike easier to jet, or run better, or any of the above???

Also, I want to confirm if the seller was lieng about the port and polish job or not. Anyone got pics of a standard cyl not ported and polished or vise versa?

I would appreciate any help guys!!

So, to continue on my saga,

There was Tyson Racing inscribed on the outside of my cylinders.

So, I googled them and found a website and a phone number.

I called the number at a guy picked up, its a guy who qworks out of his shop.

I talk to him for a few minutes, and he gave me a price of $400 to completely tear down the engine and rebuild it with new pistons, gaskets seals, etc.

Do you guys think this is to much for this type of service and parts?

If you're somewhat mechanically inclined, I say get a clymer's manual, and some beers and have at it. Not that hard. You already have it open, you're half ways there. $400 sounds a little steep to do a top end. Most likely they're ported because some builders sign the cylinders once they've done they're magic. I'm pretty sure if you search around you can find some pics of stock ported cylinders.

And when you get it back together you really need to bump up the mains to atleast 310-320s and clip to 3rd notch since your running pods, good luck and welcome to the HQ.

Stick around youll have a sweet ass banshee before you know it.

I'm not so much mechanically inclined as I am pressed for time.

I just don't have time to deal with it. I would much rather spend a couple bucks and not have to worry about it.

It took me around an hour to pull the pistons with the engine still in the banshee.

The $400 is for new pistons, pins, bearings, machining the head, replacing all gaskets throughout the entire motor.

Hes going to split the case etc.

So its for parts and labor.

You still think that's to much money?

No way, thats a hell of a deal you better jump on that for parts and labor, as long as you think you can trust the guy, go for it.

Where are you located?

So, to update my saga:

Today after work, I pulled the engine from the bike.

Took it to the guy that I spoke to last night, and here is the conclusion....

Parts and labor to:

Tear engine down completely apart, replace all seals, pistons, pins, bearing etc.

Hes going to machine the head for O-rings,

machine the head for more compression,

and weld the crank and make sure its true.

Price : $400 Parts and Labor.

I'm happy. He said I could pick it up Friday.

Only downside is, hes not going to replace the crank bearings unless they need it. He said they were $20 a piece. I guess I have to trust him on this.

I think I can trust the guy. I rolled up into his driveway, and behind his wooden fence laid a machine shop and 4 or 5 drag banshees (totally sick by the way)

He also does turbo kits for quads. I was checking one he had just did for someone on a new yzf 450, he hid the turbo underneath the seat, was a total sleeper.

He was a cool and nice guy. So far I recommend him. We will see how the engine turns out.

I live in Monroe, Michigan. I am about 45 minutes away from the place. Hes got a website www.tysonracing.com

Update:

Got my motor back as promised.

The guy also true welded the crank, and I think he machined the heads for O-rings.

I asked the guy about fuel mixture, he said he uses 20:1 in all his bikes.

Seams a little rich to me. Right now I use 40:1. I use it in my CR250 and it runs great.

I use AMS oil dominator, but, that's another story for another day.

I want to get the bike finished this weekend to take it for a ride.

I took quite a bit of it apart, soo, I will update when I get finished.

Wish me luck guys.

Update:

So I finally got around to riding the bike, took it to my usual spot and of course have problems.

The spark kept cutting in and out. I finally figured out that where the previous own had spliced the wiring harness it had become all f-ed up.

So, after fixing that, I got to test ride it.

Good power, everything seems to be working well. The power is much smoother then before.

As far as jetting goes, I got a 310 main, 27.5 pilot and needle clip in 3rd position.

I think the bike could take a bigger jet and eat the extra fuel. I want to find the biggest jet before screwing with the other ones. What do you guys think?

I was going to put a 320 in, see how she does, if it can still eat the extra fuel, I might go bigger. Once I find the biggest jet I can use, I will start messing with the other ones.

Does this make sense?

Cant report much of a plug color, haven't really had a chance to really open her up. The plugs don't look lean or rich, just look like a wet new plug when I pull them.

Hopefully today I will be able to open her up and see what she does.

Also, I got all the parts I bought on her, bumper, nerf bars etc. Looking good!!

Update:

Well, I hope no one cares how often I update my saga.

I am hoping this thread will eventually help someone else out in the future who may have the same problems.

Back to the story, I took it back to my usual spot and opened her up. Let me say one thing, 6th gear just isn't required....lol

I guess it might be useful at the dunes, but anywhere where I went, I found myself going waaaay to fast, I could easily see 70 or 80 MPH, hell even 90 doesn't seem out of reach.

As far as how she runs, runs good when your at or around the powerband. I'm 99% confident my pilot jet is to big. When I release the throttle for a few seconds and try to get back into it, it wants to load up, so once it clears itself out its fine, but I def. do not want it like this.

My next idea is to play with the jets some more, I ordered more jets, mains 330 through 360 and pilots 30 through 35. I have 320's in my tool box, I am going to throw the 320's in and put a smaller pilot in. Right now im 27.5, I going to throw the 25's in and see what happens.

My goal is to have the jetting good enough so when I give her full throttle she gives me full throttle. The way it is right now, if I stay at a higher RPM its fine, but when I completely let go of the throttle and try to get back up to RPM it takes a little bit, to much time for me.

I let you guys know how it goes tomorrow. Wish me Luck!!!

hey thanks for the story..im a beginner and im glad that you finished up your problem and told us how the fix went...too bad not everybody does that...they ask for answers and once they get it figured out you never hear from them again...it should be mandatory to let everyone know how the fix is going whether it is ongoing or fixed...

I work as a electronic technician...and all logs should be reported as ongoing or closed either way we know whats going on...

thanks again for the info..very useful i learned alot...
