Could have been old/bad fuel....sounds like a solid case of detonation.... Are you sure it couldnt be a carburation issue? A clogged main jet can send things south in a hurry!

15:1 UCCR would be a safe target. Pounds on the gage- that can vary with porting. Not a good way to build engines. -Backcountry
