Stinger Posted April 19, 2005 Report Posted April 19, 2005 So I worked on my Shee every night for a week to get it ready to go to Little Sahara, wasn't there 3 hours and the POS quit running and I was unable to fix it all weekend So here is what it did: Early in the day my parking brake sensor screwed up, wouldn't let it rev up. Unplugged it and all was well. After another hour of flawless run time where I whooped up on a bunch of quads dragging, it dies going up a steep hill. Acted like it ran out of gas. I push it to the bottom of the hill, flip to reserve, fires up. I head for home and it starts sputtering and such when I'd go over bumps, steep hills, etc, just like if I was way low on fuel. Finally it dies on me. I tell my buddy to go get me some fuel. Fill it up, will only start intermittently and then only seems to run in neutral, put it in gear and it dies within a few feet. "go get a tow rope" So I get it back to camp and check for fuel flow, I'm getting good flow so I'm like WTF??? Try to start it, it won't start. Check the spark, no spark. Borrow a coil from some Banshee guys, install it and it still won't spark. A banshee freak comes over and does a full ignition system diagnosis on it and decides it must have a bad connection somewhere as all the components test ok. Keep trying to start it and suddenly I get spark again. Fire it up, runs great...pull in the clutch and it sputters and dies Try a different guy's coil, no change. Try a different CDI, no change, pull the side cover and check the stator, tests good. Clean the flywheel pickup, no change. Grab the Clymers manual, go through the full ignition test checking resistance and such for each ignition component, everything seems to test ok. Check kill switch, seems to be fine. Plug in the parking brake, no change. Check wires from when TORS was removed, no change. Unplug everything on the harness, clean connectors, plug back in, no change. After ~8 hours in the sun, I give up and piss away my whole weekend...100 bux for the trip down the drain and I only burned 2 gallons of fuel in the shee all weekend So I trailer it 3 hours home, push it off the trailer, hop on it, kick it ONCE and it fires right up and sounds great. Put it in gear, ride about 30 feet and it shuts off. Starts right back up on one kick, ride about 10 feet and it dies. Now I have no spark again. WTF is going on here? Are there any other things that can shut the ignition down besides the TORS and Parking brake sensor??? It almost acts like it's some sort of safety mechanism shutting it down. Quote
Stinger Posted April 19, 2005 Author Report Posted April 19, 2005 OK, now I've unplugged the kill switch and I'm working on checking the key switch...still no go. Quote
JKJK Posted April 20, 2005 Report Posted April 20, 2005 Sounds like you've covered all bases real well.I would suggest swapping the cdi box out with a known good one from a friends shee if possable. Quote
Stinger Posted April 20, 2005 Author Report Posted April 20, 2005 Already swapped in a known good CDI. The only part I haven't swapped is the stator...because it's not a quick swap. I think it's about got to be a problem with the wiring harness... Quote
ledofthezep Posted April 20, 2005 Report Posted April 20, 2005 I feel your pain bro...didn't get shit for riding in, did get about an hour in late friday night, but I think my top-end may have went bye-bye; haven't gotten a chance to tear into it yet to find out. Cleaned my carbs & they were fine, didn't really do much more since I had the buggy there and haven't gotten to drive it much lately. Mines' doing similar to what you're describing, but I have no exhaust on the left side, dunno if there's spark or not, could be the coil...dunno yet. Owell, if it's the top end it's time for a better port job & new pistons, the stock 97's gotta be getting tired anyway. You may try swapping the stator, knowing that you got on it & kicked the shit out of it and suddenly had spark...makes me want to say there's a lose connection somewhere. GD I hate troublshooting electrical issues. Quote
MonkeyBoy Posted April 20, 2005 Report Posted April 20, 2005 You are definately due a stator check, but I would first check the ground from the stator to the quad. Mine was corrroded and would cause exactly thise symptoms. Moved the ground to the engine cases, and have had no problems since. Quote
Stinger Posted April 20, 2005 Author Report Posted April 20, 2005 I hate chasing electrical problems as well...what a PITA. Can you be more specific about rerouting the stator grounds? Where do they attach now and where did you put yours? Quote

The metal eventually rusted, so I was loosinig the ground. I moved it to one of the case bolts on the motor. No more problems. Quote
Brian060 Posted June 19, 2005 Report Posted June 19, 2005 Im assuming you havent had the flywheel taken off, since you said you havent changed the stator. After I had my flywheel lightend I didnt put it back on tight enough. It would run in neutral, but when in gear it would die. It also got progressively worse. I only mention this because I was having symptoms identical to what you described. I hope this helps,Good luck -Brian Quote

I'll be riding, stop somewhere and shut it off, then out of no where it won't start up again, has spark but very weak. Won't start up by kicking it over but will start on a decent speed jump-start. Had it happen half a dozen times to the Silver lake dunes.... Now instead of going with both sides having weak spark, now one side one fire hardly at all........damn electrical crap! I think its time I call Ricky Stator, Dyna and MSD......get rid of all that Yamacrap Quote
