mdhc500 Posted July 28, 2008 Report Posted July 28, 2008 Here is an article I found in regards to reading your pistons to check your jetting... Piston Wash? http://www.bikemanperformance.com/tech_detail.php?ta=4 I thought I had my jetting at least close ( I have not been able to do a plug chop yet becuase I do not have an area that I can wind out 5th or 6th gear)... Going by the article I was way wrong it looks like... Here is a picture of my pistons with the head off... Luckily (I HOPE), I hope I did not do any major damage because I only have a few rides on it since changing it from stock... If I have to trailer it 50 miles I will be doing plug chops... Here is the pic... I'd be interested to hear your thoughts... Quote
jbooker82 Posted July 28, 2008 Report Posted July 28, 2008 So if you think it looks lean, what are you going to change jetting. Yea you can probably assume that your bike is lean or rich by looking at the pistons but how are you going to tell where it is lean at. You might have a Rich main, and a lean needle setting. 80% of your riding ocurs on the needle. So it looks like your pistons are lean, so you up the main. Make it more rich on the top end and still lean on the needle. That is why you have to do a plug chop, and do it right. Other wise your getting an AVERAGE reading, not exact answers. josh Quote
J-Madd Posted July 30, 2008 Report Posted July 30, 2008 Interesting. Any gas burning piston that I've seen, where the jetting was definitely rich, was completely black, with a thick coat of carbon. I know that these engines were rich..running 350 or 360 mains and stock pilot and needle postion on a stock engine with + timing, T5s, pods, etc. Quote
mdhc500 Posted July 30, 2008 Author Report Posted July 30, 2008 (edited) I thought so too... I was sure my mains were rich or at least leaning toward the rich side becuase I had good dark color on the plugs... I will be doing a plug chop first to be sure that I have my mains right. Then I will deal with the other circuits one by one. After I get it as close (as I am able to) I will pop the head off and take some more pics... If anyone out these knows for certain your bike is dialed in on the jetting take a few minutes and pop of your head and post some pics if you get bored... Edited July 30, 2008 by mdhc500 Quote
