What compression?

How much timing are you at now?

Usually, cutting out on the top end is lean...

If you put new plugs in it....are you going for a WOT run an looking for the black smoke ring at the base of the porcelin?

I know it takes time to get heat and color the plugs, but after a WOT run or two you should have the smoke ring.

What are your plugs gapped at? Have you checked your flywheel to pickup gap?

If you're 100% certain you're pig fat...but it's breaking up on top...time to go over all the electrical with a fine tooth comb.

No amount of jetting or tuning will help until the electrical is sorted. Could be a bad ground, bare wire, bad kill switch.

Go over all of it....

+7 on plate and on curve 3

165 psi

after a few passes there was really no ring. no heat sig on the band, no timing mark on the strap

plugs are gapped to 21 i want to say, it's been a few months so i might be a little off...

pickup is 18

when i put beaus stock cdi on it wouldnt start, put my dyna back on and it fired right up.

After only a few passes...you probably won't see the burn on the base or strap, especially if you know it's rich.

Close the gap to .018...see if that helps.

Put the plate on 2 and use curve three, or...get rid of the dyna, put a stock known working CDI on and try the plate at 7.

I think 7 on the plate plus the Dyna might be little much....

Now...you know how I feel about throwing timing and compression at cubs, as well as fuel. But as far as timing goes...I'd start with something a little more tame...then work your way up.

Have to remember, I run 300ft. You can get away with more timing than duning....

Greg I thought you were at 4 on the plate? I think you need to ditch that Dyna as Dave said. Put some .120 in the carbs with the timing around 7-8. My bike didnt really wake up until I put 10 degrees of timing in it.

With your bike running the way it did on its last outing. I really think you have ignition problems. Especially since it wouldn't start with the stock CDI.

Greg bought his carbs off a buddy of mine.

I talked to Kim @ K&T for the suggested jetting. Greg, last I checked...sent them to K&T for Kim to do them.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but from all the jetting specs, etc., that I've seen...they don't run as big of dumps or mains in the Mikunis as they do the Keihins.

If it ran rich on 116 a 120 is going to be like pouring a bucket down the motor, but like dave said thats probly the differance in Keihens and Miks...

I bought a CDI off ebay and i couldnt get it to start with the stock CDI in my drive way. Then when we got to Pismo Beau gave me his stocker to try and it did the same thing. but i put the dyna back on and it started up first kick....

I was at 4 but that first day that we went to camp and i was playing with the fuel lines i bumped it to 7

I started out of 4 on the plate and stock on the dyna, then after we made the jetting changes i ran out of options becasue the broken main. so i started bumping the timing on the dyna and it ran better each time. but it still wasnt runnign right.

Also I noticed that i wasnt getting hardly any smoke out the pipes like most alky bikes. but it wasnt lean. I could hold my hand out and it woud be covered in raw fuel

Greg what you should have done is quit bullshitting around and left that bitch here with me....I would have taken good care of it for you!!!! Hell shes just getting dusty now!!!
lol that bitch would have been stripped down and hand nuts rubbed all over it if I allowed you to play with it :)

21 might be too much for a stock CDI, whereas the Dyna's stronger spark can handle the bigger gap.

I'd say you're rich, and not enough timing. Of course the dome configuration is a huge variable also. What is the squish? Didn't see what you said compression was, but of course that could affect what you're plug is telling you as well.

In the original post on this thread, I came to the conclusion that it was way rich, and holds heat in the pipes, while cooling the cylinders. This is even more dramatic with the T5s. I've since learned to tune my OOF bikes after a run by feeling of the pipes, transfers, then reading the plugs to get the jetting spot on. Cool pipes/hot transfers = lean most of the time.....very HOT pipes, cool transfers = rich. I also put that one back on gas with stock carbs. It never seemed right with the 34 pjs on alky (zero port work and T5s.) I also ran/run 20:1, not 24 like I mentioned above. I mis-posted that ratio.
