250Rho Posted May 11, 2008 Report Posted May 11, 2008 just like it says i overheated my bike to the point of siesure and need advice. i was a few miles from home and overheated i let it set and cool doun with the plugs out untill icould turn it over by hand and it seemed free and i diddnt hear any metal in the motor grinding and then i put em in and it seemed to make good compression so i fired it up and it seemed ok so i rode it home. i need advice on some good ways to see if and how bad it was hurt, id like to keep the motor together but i guess if i really need to i can pull the top end off and look. also whaty should i look for if ido this? Wildcardracing Posted May 11, 2008 Report Posted May 11, 2008 First thing, check your compression with a guage...your cylinders should be within a few psi of each other. Second you can pull your exhaust pipes off and look through the exhaust ports as you rotate the engine over to see how badly you scuffed up the piston skirts. They will usually scuff far worse on the exhaust side as this is where most of your heat is directed (light scuffing is normal, huge gouges or chunks missing not good). If it compression tests ok, doesn't have any knocking, and the skirts look descent then you are probably ok. Then you should also pull you water pump cover and check that the impellor isn't melted, you need to figure out why it over heated. Coolant level, water pump impellor, jetting and head gasket leaks are common reasons for overheating issues. Quote
250Rho Posted May 12, 2008 Author Report Posted May 12, 2008 the cylendrs R makin about 130 psi with the bike hot it seemes to be the same on eatch side. im pretty sure that the reason it overheated is that i was runnin too hard cause i didnt really find anything loose or generaly not looking right...like wot doun the road.( not a gook IDA) thanks man great advice i never would have thought of lookin through the exaust  Quote
Wildcardracing Posted May 12, 2008 Report Posted May 12, 2008 No problem, just a little trick I though I'd pass on. Quote
Snopczynski Posted May 12, 2008 Report Posted May 12, 2008 was your radiator cap working right, how did it overheat? Quote
monster_energy06 Posted May 12, 2008 Report Posted May 12, 2008 last time my bike over heated my head gasket was fucked. 30 min job to change included takin off plastics and tank . if i were u ide take the head off and take a look to make sure like snop said chek the radiator cap... Quote
250Rho Posted May 12, 2008 Author Report Posted May 12, 2008 i borrowed a coolant system pressure tester from my neighbor and i can get it into the danger range and still no leaks. it also hasent gotten that hot sinse that day so i sorta feel ok but a little weary. i had coolant system problemes with a snowmobile once and thats how i found the blown head gasket. unfortunatly it was too late i already blew a hole in one of my pistons. (that wasnt the only factor though it was the oil injector lines got old and came off!) Quote
Snopczynski Posted May 12, 2008 Report Posted May 12, 2008 I would put a new radiator cap on it. Quote
