Does anyone know how much of a gap should be between the gas tank and the steering loop? I smashed mine tight against the tank. I didn't know I bent the steering until after I tried to pound the tab

what you need to do is bend the steering loop back and gusset it. ive used a hydraulic jack before to bend them back. once you think youre close fit your tank and plastic back on it to make sure its aligned properly. once you get it where you want it you need to figure out where it bent from. if it was just the upper half, which im assuming it was, youll need to gusset on the front of the steering loop. a small piece of either 1/8" or 3/16" steel will work fine. if you bend it from the bottom half, youll have to reweld or maybe even gusset those triangular looking braces.. see what im saying?

I am going to try to bend it back. I was just wondering how much of a gap there should be between the tank and the loop? The steering loop is smashed so tight against the gas tank I can't even get the vent hose from the tank out from between the two. I don't know how much of a gap there should be so I was hoping someone would have an idea. I would just use the plastic to tell but I tried to bend the tabs to make the plastic fit before I noticed I bent the whole steering loop. So if someone could give me a measurement that would at least give me a place to bend the steering loop back then I could bend the tabs for the plastic to fit. Thanks

the tank to loop measurement isnt going to be that accurate. you need the measurement from the loop to the cross brace where the seat slips under. or some other point on the frame..

I just did the same thing tonight. I measured from the cross brace (the top of the bar and pressed the tape up against the bracket on top of the bar) to the brace where the seat slips under and got 16 5/16". If it makes you feel any better I destroyed my right upper 450 A arm, the Steering stem, that brace, and ruined my friends (the bike I hit) Upper and lower a-arm, Rotor, spindle and maybe some wheel bearings. Also the typical injurys to myself as the result of being thrown 10-20ft after we hit.

When you said the cross brace are you talking about the brace in the handle bars?

No I'm talking about the brace on top of the hoop. The brace is used to secure the top of the steering stem to the bike. My measurement was based off of the inside of that brace closest to the seat (rest the tape on the hoop and pushed up against the brace) and to the outside of the seat brace (towards the back of the bike). Hopefully this helps. If you are still stuck I'll tear the bike back down and take a picture for you.

Almost forgot. As for pulling the hoop back to the correct position, I used a Heavy duty rachet strape and parked the bike's front bumper against a pole and had someone sit on the bike while I cranked the strap down.
