Just put a crank in my quad and when I fired it back up it will not idle and runs pig fat at idle to 1/4 throttle. It seems fine at any thottle above 1/4. I had no issues like this before I took it apart. It is shooting out raw gas and smoking alot. I have cleaned the carbs and they seem fine. If I shut the gas off and let the bowls get low it runs fine till fuel runs out. What could it be? Could putting the ignition advancer in backward cause this? I am screwed if I cann,t fix it A.S.A.P. Thanks in advance!

Specifics about your bike would help diagnose the problem. Best guess if all you did was replace a crank and change the timing:

1. you f'd up the reassembly

2. the problem that caused the crank to fail originally hasn't been fixed

Yes, severely retarded timing could cause your problem, as could a number of other things, like reversing the slides on the carbs (assuming you're using stock carbs). See why we need to know the mods and everything you did during the rebuild?

Sounds like carb slides are on the wrong sides. Cutaway at the bottom must be towards the back. Let me know.

choke tube will usualy make the bike idle high, i'd check the carb slides as was mentioned. if there in backward (cutaways forward instead of to the rear of the carb) the bike will not want to start or run at idle but will run like it should once you get on it...i've done it before, strip both carbs down on the bench and dont pay attention when re-assembling them. the slides drop right in and all your payng attention to is the slots lining up on the tab's then you goto fire the bike up...suck's but it happens when your rushing to get it back together....
