bmbiff Posted April 19, 2007 Report Posted April 19, 2007 so awhile ago i smoked a cylinder in my banshee and big bored it when i got it fixed. Got a brand new crank trued and welded, port job, and new cylinder sleeves and pistons. Stock head was cleaned up and milled down also. got the shee back together and running. Noticed a small coolant leak coming from the studs on the top of my head. Took head off first time and found that a stud was loose. Had the shop that did my motor work fix that and put head back on. Now leak isn't as bad but is still evident. Not an actual running leak like before but more of a wetness that occurs around several studs on the head. coolant looked evident in the cylinders. one was nice and clean with an oil film and the other had a patch of carbon builld up on the top of it. Have been told several things like i need to pull all studs and re-seal them back into cylinder because the bore job for new sleeves got into the water jackets. When inspected upon second tear down now appears to not be the problem. can't see any coolant coming from studs. I noticed though that it doesn't seem like the head is sealing down to the cylinder. when taken apart is comes right off instead of peeling it off. tried checking my head with a ruler and also by rubbing it on fine sand paper on a flat surface and haven't really been able to tell if its warped. was thinking if i just get some liquid gasket to help do the job if this would work? shee runs like a raped ape before torn apart again but only been rode 1-2 hours total since rebuild with big bore kit and didn't feel safe running other than just small warm up rides (10-15 min) with coolant leak. anyone seen this before or maybe know whats going on. dwrracing Posted April 19, 2007 Report Posted April 19, 2007 well u did torque them in sequence right? maybe the cylinders need to be re decked or the head???? Quote
Screaming Yellow Zonker Posted April 19, 2007 Report Posted April 19, 2007 what some guys with high Hp engines do is ut a small amount of rtv around the coolant passages. But I would check the top of the cylinders to make sure they are square. Also make sure that both cylinders are square to each other. Quote
badassbanshee479 Posted April 19, 2007 Report Posted April 19, 2007 my cool head did that on my cub cylinders, you can either get a set of copper washers to put under the nuts, or put alittle rtv on the threads of the studs before you torque the head down and you should be fine. Also make sure you are toqueing the head down in order or it will not seal correctly! Quote
dajogejr Posted April 19, 2007 Report Posted April 19, 2007 I put Hi temp RTV on the first 3 or 4 threads of all my head studs. Finger tight, let them sit for 1/2 hour in the jugs, then reassemble. As said, tighten the head by spec....and I usually go 10 ft. lbs., then 15, then 21 to 22 finally... Nice even torque.... Quote
