too_fazt Posted March 8, 2007 Report Posted March 8, 2007 well i just pulled my dads old banshee out of the shed the other day, cleaned up the carbs and got it to start (with a little help from some starter fluid) well my question is when i did a search for the vins i couldn find any (no its not a stolen bike so please dont post if its along those lines, i wana figure this out). not even a hint of were they should be. i know its not a j arm but i dont know what year it is., what do i do since i doubt my pops even has an idea of where his bill of sale/reciept or title or anything is, shyt he didn even know you could put vins on a bike. i heard they can tell what the vins are from the engine, but that also doesnt make to much sense to me. and if i take the bike to get registered i know the person helping me is gona give me the biggest shit face of life if i dont have any paper work or nada.sooooo any insight would be greatly appreciated, i know u guys kno your shyt. thanks. i also live in florida, if any residents can help out Quote
Bansh-eman Posted March 8, 2007 Report Posted March 8, 2007 did you search the number on the motor or on the frame??? also pull the plug on the cdi and snap a pict of it... that will narrow it down to 95-95 or 97- present being you said you know its not j arm... then from there im sure w can figure it out Quote
too_fazt Posted March 8, 2007 Author Report Posted March 8, 2007 well i just figured it out from looking at the engine that it is a 88. and the 4bolt pattern in the rear sprocket. which explains the lack of vins. no need to get it registered nowlol Quote
woodro77 Posted March 8, 2007 Report Posted March 8, 2007 (edited) well i just figured it out from looking at the engine that it is a 88. and the 4bolt pattern in the rear sprocket. which explains the lack of vins. no need to get it registered nowlol why would a 88 not have a vin ? you said it doesnt have j arms . you can tell the year by the engine number , look in the front of a chiltons repair manual , they list engine numbers and what year they were built , if you post the engine # i could tell you the year. RIPRuck Posted March 8, 2007 Report Posted March 8, 2007 Well the VIN on my banshee which is a 2000 is located on the left side of frame right below where the engine numbers are stamped. You might need to sand off some paint if the frames been painted! Quote
IROOST1 Posted March 9, 2007 Report Posted March 9, 2007 DONT SAND IT, get yourself some goof-off and some paper towels and start rubbing away. Its on the left side near the pegs in the middle of the metal bar. Quote
Wallrat Posted March 10, 2007 Report Posted March 10, 2007 (edited) Why wouldn't you want to sand it? I've done it before. Just don't attack it with a pneumatic spinning 80 grit. A piece of 220 grit and your hand will take off the paint just fine without sanding out the numbers - well unless you sat there sanding the one spot for 5 hours. It should be on the lower frame rail, just forward of the left footpeg. And yes, they had VIN's in 1988. Also you shouldn't have a problem with the DMV. Since its been sitting for so long any record of it is long gone. Worst case you might need to get it inspected by the CHP, but I doubt it. Edited March 10, 2007 by Wallrat Quote
IROOST1 Posted March 10, 2007 Report Posted March 10, 2007 why sand it if all he wants to do is get the vin #'s. just goo gone it. then they will be PERFECTLY visible. as long as some dillhole didnt sand them away, or if its a replacement frame from yamaha, then it wont have any. Quote
too_fazt Posted March 13, 2007 Author Report Posted March 13, 2007 (edited) the numbers are 3GG-188629....and no luck on vins, is there anyway if i can find out if its a yamaha replacement, if not im goin to sand away the pain on it and see if there under it. this i would rather not do because the paint is still good on it which is another strange thing since it was done in early 90's.
