Motoman Posted March 4, 2007 Report Posted March 4, 2007 Hi guys, I just bought a 1997 Banshee YZ350. I noticed it smokes alot so I did a compression test. It was alittle less then 90 psi in both cylinders. Is that too low to just replace the rings and have it be ok or does it need to be bored out. Please let me know. Thanks, John Quote
dajogejr Posted March 4, 2007 Report Posted March 4, 2007 First things first. What is your elevation? Second, did you test it cold or warm? Did you hold the throttle wide open? Did you keep on kicking and kicking until it didn't go up anymore? Next...a machine shop will tell you how much it needs to be bored...have them mic (measure) the cylinders... Quote

Motoman Posted March 5, 2007 Author Report Posted March 5, 2007 Ditto  Im not much above sea level and I did warm it up alittle before I checked it. I did keep kicking it until it didnt go up anymore. Do you think just a new set of rings would do the trick?. Quote

Do you think just a new set of rings would do the trick?. If you are really...REALLY tight on money, hone 'em and put rings on. However...It's about 200 to 250 for a complete, fresh top end. Bored cylinders, tight fit, new pistons, rings, pins, gaskets....the whole 9 yards. There's no way anyone can tell you with any certainty if that alone will be "enough"...chances area fresh hone would be ok...but if it's at 90 PSI, that motor has been worn out for a while. Either way, rings are about 40 bucks, gaskets another 30 or so... IMO it's not worth replacing rings only.... Quote
