Is a title really needed?

Hey guys.. I'm looking to purchase a 2000 banshee with some mods.. The guy is selling it for $2000 but only comes with a bill of sale and states that its legit in the ad. I live in MA and called the recreational vehicle department where they get registered asking them what would they need and was told just a bill of sale. I called the guy back selling the ATV and got the VIN numbers to have checked out at the police station which I'll be calling tomorrow. If everything comes back clear from the police should I still be worried and not buy it? Do I NEED a title?

Here's whats explained about the bike in the ad..

2000 Yamaha Banshee Looking to sell this weekend 2000 cash FIRM. Bike is VERY FAST and runs excellent. It is bored 30 over has pro taper bars new grips, Moose nerf bars, Pure sports bandit tires Toomey exhaust, 2006 graphics kit. Dont have title but bill of sale. Bike is Legit.

i would jump on that but switch out the frame to deal with the no title problem.

^^ I think thats the answer I was looking for. I will still run the VIN and check the bike over, its just that I only have like $2k to spend without the wife going ape shit on me. I've seen title'd frames on ebay for around $300 - $400 shipped but just have to worry about the swap..

if he owns it he should have a title. i wouldnt buy a quad with out one.maybe if you want to part it out but if its hot you could lose your ass as far as the cops go it might come back clean now but be stolen from somewhere elese and not showed up yet.

That's what I was trying to get at.

have the cops run the vin # before you buy it , and if its stolen it will come up , if not you can get a title for it , i have done it before , go to your dmv and ask them what you need , every state is different , when i did it all i needed was a bill of sale and i had to fill out some paper on the history of the quad , (how you got it) .

you also have to be careful of it having a lean against it , (original owner still owes money on it ) as good as stolen cause you are going to never get it back if you get caught on it .

just run the numbers , that will show everything , if its clean it sound like a good deal , goodluck

it very easy , make sure you run the vin before you buy it because if it comes up hot the cops are going to want the quad

Somebody posted a website in another thread that was a free place to check VIN numbers. I can't remember what it was. Do you happen to remember?

Where abouts are you in mass? Im 10 minutes outside of hartford CT, I have a 2001 frame with a title, coated whatever color you want. Might be close enough to pick up and save the shipping cost, plus get something trick for about the same amout as an E-bay frame.

That sounds like a pretty nice offer.

I live in SE MA/RI area which isnt too far from you, but travel to New Haven alot which is right around the corner from you. How much are you selling the frame with a blue powder coat? Its a 2001 frame with title you say but is it straight, no bends, cracks or welds? LMK!
