okbeast Posted February 21, 2007 Report Posted February 21, 2007 Lookin to get some regular 20x10x8 8 paddle haulers. They're kinda high in price and I'm really just lookin for somethin to run at LS in the softer sand. I looked at teh AMS sand snakes cuz they're cheaper and pretty light but saw they were only 2 ply, and seeing as I'll be doin some trails there I want somethin that's gonna hold up well. Would it be worth it to get the haulers for my "recreational" riding or are they just as thin on the AMS's. Quote
Malott 1 Posted February 21, 2007 Report Posted February 21, 2007 We run haulers on all our trail bikes down at LS. We have never had a problem. Those tires are alot tougher than people think. Quote

Not only does Skat Trak offer several variations of blades they also offer several variations of carcasses. You won't see RMATV selling all of those options, but you may run into if your are shopping with Sand Tires Unlimited or Fullerton Sand Tires. With that said, a normal Hauler carcass that is only buffed once across the crown are based on a 2 ply Cheng Shin or Nankang carcass. Since they have been buffed, it is pretty hard to call them a 2 ply tire anymore. You won't see anyone other than someone selling a molded sand tire listing a ply rating along with it. Skat Trak builds a damn tough tire no matter what. It's not really something you need to worry about. Quote
okbeast Posted February 21, 2007 Author Report Posted February 21, 2007 Well if they start out as a 2-ply and are buffed then sounds like the AMS 2-ply's would probably be a good option for me. Quote
Malott 1 Posted February 21, 2007 Report Posted February 21, 2007 just my opinion but I like the haulers better. When I first started going down to LS I had a set of v paddles and I tried a set of my buddys haulers and I liked them alot better. You will hear some people say they have trouble turning with them but honestly I never noticed having any problems turning with them. My dune bike is a 686 raptor with 21 inch 8 paddle extremes and I carve thru the trails with no problems at all. Quote
okbeast Posted February 21, 2007 Author Report Posted February 21, 2007 Yeah I've got osme v-paddles right now and they're great in the trails and just the regular duning but they're not worth shit for drag racing, and I'm going with a group of guys that only races pretty much so I want somethin that'll benefit me in both aspects. It's all a personal preference, but I havbe found that the molded paddles like AMS sells tend be very thing in the blade area and are very prone to splitting out and chunking. Haulers are the only paddle that I will ever buy based on my experience with them. If you don't like the straight blades then Skat Trak makes a tire named "The Edge" that also perform very well. As mentioned above, I also run straight paddles and can keep up with anyone that I have ever ridden with as far as turning is concerned. The only bike I ever had a problem turning with while running straight paddles was a Raptor. Quote
wesw Posted February 21, 2007 Report Posted February 21, 2007 do like mallot says get soem haulers. reg haulers i trashed aroudn the dunes never had a problem. dont get double buffs or tripple buff tires you will be fine. some on ebay i think i saw. Quote
FASTOYS Posted February 21, 2007 Report Posted February 21, 2007 Another option is the Sand Stars as they hook decent for a v pdl. and still carve the dunes great. A "tough tire" would be the Kenda Dune runner or Cheng chin Dune hopper. I have also not had much trouble with a hauler paddle for duning. Most likely if you tear up a hauler .........your gonna tear up any other tire that was on there too! Quote

If I was ever in a position that made it so I couldn't use Skat Trak tires they wou;d be what I would run. I may buy at set at some point just for the hell of it. Plus, they are a fairly sexy looking tire. Thanks for the reminder Jeff! Quote
