94BANSHEE Posted February 6, 2007 Report Posted February 6, 2007 hi im in the market for a cdi and im not sure to get a stock or aftermarket. now, i can get used ones cheap, but there ones such as this one on ebay http://cgi.ebay.ca/1997-2006-Yamaha-Banshe...1QQcmdZViewItem which isnt the expensive adjustable ones, that claims to make your banshee go faster, 1000RPM more quicker with the rev limit and 8hp. would a cdi like this be anymore of an improvement than a stock one? thanks! Bansh-eman Posted February 6, 2007 Report Posted February 6, 2007 well first off banshees dont ave a rev limiter so to say this box will raise your limiter 1000 rmp isnt realistic. by changing the cdi wont make the operating max rpm output change... your hardwear can only take so much befor it reaches its weakest point. a cdi simply will not change this... now on anothewr note an adjustable cdi I.E. dynatek are with out a dought worth the 250 bucks... they are very ez to use stock and th e curves from the factory arnt too bad. if you have the time and money to invest in the programer and softwaer and dyno time you can squeeze out quite a bit of power from your timing alone. Aftermarket CDI's are one of those items that usually have alot of spec'smanship involved when they are advertised. It sounds like this one just has a different timing curve in it compared to stock. The RPM increase doesn't reallt matter because it really controlled by the pipes and porting that you have. The hp increase you will see will really depend on how the timing curve interacts with the modifications that you have done to your motor. If you're bike is not heavily modified, an adjustable timing plate or offset flywheel key when used with your OEM CDI will probably yield the best results and be alot less expensive. Quote

IMO they're junk...plus non adjustable. A plate costs 10 or 15 bucks more, and is fully adjustable. Pipes, Carbs, Intake, Porting, compression...etc., dictate how high your engine can rev...NOT the ignition. 4 strokes, however....are different. Quote
fast500#12 Posted February 7, 2007 Report Posted February 7, 2007 don't waste your money. learn from me. you will never be able to kick start your bike again if you in stall that piece of shit. the only after market cdi's that are worth a shit are the dyna and msd. Quote

fast500#12 Posted February 8, 2007 Report Posted February 8, 2007 (edited) just wondering, how would it be harder to start? something happens in the cdi at low rpm (kicking over) you get weak intermitent spark. i had one and my bike would only kick start if i put the stock cdi back on. i emailed the company several time and got several new ones (4 to be exact) with the problems supposedly fixed and still nothing. i eventually goy my money back. as a matter of fact if you wanna give one a try i have two in my garage, give me your address and i'll send both of them to you for free. fastrthnu Posted February 8, 2007 Report Posted February 8, 2007 I wish MSD would have made an electrical system for the banshee with cdi stator coil and mechanical advance timing plate. So you could dial in an exact timing curve and get way more power in all the band and a much stronger spark. That would be killer. Quote
